EVERY UK NUMBER ONE SONG: ‘(You’re the) Devil in Disguise’ – Elvis Presley

What was the number one song in the UK on 1st August 1963?

By Hayley Beasley Dye

Presley tops the charts again with (You’re the) Devil in Disguise, which was number one for 1 week.

Well, this is a clever little tune from Elvis. I like how the melody moves slowly and smoothly when he sings about her angelic qualities, but it quickly changes to a faster and more hectic beat as soon as we start hearing about being devilish. Anyway, Elvis sounds a tad bitter in this song. Move on, mate. Forget about her.

Lyrics

You look like an angel
Walk like an angel
Talk like an angel
But I got wise
You’re the devil in disguise
Oh yes you are
The devil in disguise
You fooled me with your kisses
You cheated and you schemed
Heaven knows how you lied to me
You’re not the way you seemed
You look like an angel
Walk like an angel
Talk like an angel
But I got wise
You’re the devil in disguise
Oh yes you are
The devil in disguise
I thought that I was in heaven
But I was sure surprised
Heaven help me, I didn’t see
The devil in your eyes
You look like an angel
Walk like an angel
Talk like an angel
But I got wise
You’re the devil in disguise
Oh yes you are
The devil in disguise
You’re the devil in disguise
Oh yes you are
The devil in disguise
Oh yes you are
The devil in disguise
