EVERY UK NUMBER ONE SONG: ‘A Hard Day’s Night’ – The Beatles

What was the number one song in the UK on 23rd July 1964?

Back once again, here’s The Beatles, number one with A Hard Day’s Night for 3 weeks.

From The Beatles film with the same name, A Hard Day’s Night is their 5th number one in a year. After that first note is piercingly strummed on the guitar, you know exactly what you’re in for. Like most Beatles songs at the time, it’s a short sharp injection of guitar pop and of course, it’s incredibly catchy. The title derived from something Ringo Starr said as he emerged from working hard all day, realising it was in fact deep into the night. This song has some of the most memorable lyrics of The Beatles and it composition is interesting as it doesn’t seem to have a chorus or are the verses in fact choruses or is the bridge the chorus? It’s unusual and it works. Of course.

Lyrics

It’s been a hard day’s night, and I’ve been working like a dog
It’s been a hard day’s night, I should be sleeping like a log
But when I get home to you I’ll find the things that you do
Will make me feel alright
You know I work all day to get you money to buy you things
And it’s worth it just to hear you say you’re going to give me everything
So why on earth should I moan, ’cause when I get you alone
You know I feel ok
When I’m home everything seems to be right
When I’m home feeling you holding me tight, tight, yeah
It’s been a hard day’s night, and I’ve been working like a dog
It’s been a hard day’s night, I should be sleeping like a log
But when I get home to you I’ll find the things that you do
Will make me feel alright, oww
So why on earth should I moan, ’cause when I get you alone
You know I feel ok
When I’m home everything seems to be right
When I’m home feeling you holding me tight, tight, yeah
Oh, it’s been a hard day’s night, and I’ve been working like a dog
It’s been a hard day’s night, I should be sleeping like a log
But when I get home to you I’ll find the things that you do
Will make me feel alright
You know I feel alright
You know I feel alright
