What was the number one song in the UK on 10th September 1964?
British invasion band, The Kinks got their first number one with You Really Got Me, which stayed at the top spot for 2 weeks.
Described by Dave Davies as “a love song for street kids”, you can really hear what he meant. The power chords of the guitar build throughout the song and the vocals almost sound like a crowd chant. It’s a simple, but very effective classic tune that became the group’s breakthrough hit.
Lyrics
Girl, you really got me goin’
You got me so I don’t know what I’m doin’ now
Yeah, you really got me now
You got me so I can’t sleep at night
You got me so I don’t know what I’m doin’ now
Yeah, you really got me now
You got me so I can’t sleep at night
Yeah, you really got me now
You got me so I don’t know what I’m doin’ now
Oh yeah, you really got me now
You got me so I can’t sleep at night
You got me so I don’t know what I’m doin’ now
Oh yeah, you really got me now
You got me so I can’t sleep at night
You really got me
You really got me
You really got me
You really got me
You really got me
See, don’t ever set me free
I always want to be by your side
Girl, you really got me now
You got me so I can’t sleep at night
I always want to be by your side
Girl, you really got me now
You got me so I can’t sleep at night
Yeah, you really got me now
You got me so I don’t know what I’m doin’ now
Oh yeah, you really got me now
You got me so I can’t sleep at night
You got me so I don’t know what I’m doin’ now
Oh yeah, you really got me now
You got me so I can’t sleep at night
You really got me
You really got me
You really got me
Oh no
You really got me
You really got me
Oh no
See, don’t ever set me…
