INTERVIEW: astrid

They’ve gone the distance and are still going!

astrid have had a fantastic journey and are about to release a new EP on February 14th.

Here’s a sneak preview of their re-imagining of one of my favourite songs ‘Modes Of Transport’ and then read on to find out what Charlie from the band had to say when I asked him a few questions.

TAPM: It’s great to have you back making more music but who are your musical influences?

Charlie: The Las, Neil Young, The Velvet Underground, Fleetwood Mac and Neil Diamond

TAPM: Awesome! So What was the last song you listened to?

Charlie: ‘Carry On by The Sea Atlas’.

TAPM: Cool – let’s watch the video…

TAPM: We love your song ‘Distance’ – tell us more about it…

Charlie: Willie wrote that song when he was 17. He’s never told me the full story but I think it’s about a girl.

TAPM: We love knowing what the number one song in the charts was when people were born – what was yours?

Charlie: Bee Gees ‘Love You Inside Out’.

TAPM: Okay, I don’t actually think that got to number one, you need to check your sources but since you love the Bee Gees so much, here we go…

TAPM: Tell us something embarrassing about yourself…

Charlie: I binge watch My 600lb life on TLC maybe followed by an episode of The Kardashians till the guilt and shame of it make me stop!

TAPM: Hmmm…

TAPM: What’s your favourite song lyric from one of your songs?

Charlie: “I can’t find my heart, inside my mind” from Danger Signals of the new album.

TAPM: Nice! Favourite songs lyric ever?

Charlie: “I got married in a rush to save a kid from been deported now she’s in love” from ‘The State That I Am In’ by Belle & Sebastian.

TAPM: Another favourite of mine!

TAPM: Tell us more about the split and the reform?

Charlie: We split up in 2004 after promoting our third album ’one in four’. Willie and I have always remained best pals. The band felt tired and we all definitely needed to make serious life changes so it felt like the right thing to do. Willie and I wanted to make music together again in 2016 and when we listened to the demos it sounded just like an astrid album.

TAPM: Who is the Queen of Pop?

Charlie: Lady Gaga

TAPM: After Madonna’s recent antics I’m inclined to agree with you.

TAPM: Who is the King of Pop?

Charlie: Lewis Capaldi.

TAPM: King of TikTok maybe…

TAPM: What’s the plan for the rest of 2020?

Charlie: We’re going on a UK tour late spring in support of the EP release and a Summer of Festivals then I feel like we’re ready to record our 5th album.

TAPM: Can’t wait! Find out more about the tour here and you never know you might invite us along, right? Oh and don’t forget my t-shirt!
