EVERY UK NUMBER ONE SONG: ‘Pretty Flamingo’ – Manfred Mann

What was the number one song in the UK on 5th May 1966?

British rock band, Manfred Mann were number one for 3 weeks with Pretty Flamingo.

Oh I love this song! I didn’t realise I knew it until it started playing. It’s a lovely tune paying homage to a neighbourhood hottie. One of my favourite facts I’ve learned while researching these songs from the 60s is that Darius Danesh covered this song for the NME War Child charity album. And if you don’t now who Darius Danesh is then, well I can only feel pity for you.

Lyrics

On our block all of the guys call her flamingo
Cause her hair glows like the sun
And her eyes can light the skies
When she walks she moves so fine like a flamingo
Crimson dress that clings so tight
She’s out of reach and out of sight
When she walks by she brightens up the neighbourhood
Oh every guy would make her his if he just could
If she just would
Some sweet day I’ll make her mine pretty flamingo
Then every guy will envy me
Cause paradise is where I’ll be
Pretty flamingo pretty flamingo
When she walks by she brightens up the neighbourhood
Oh every guy would make her his if he just could
If she just would
Some sweet day I’ll make her mine pretty flamingo
Then every guy will envy me
Cause paradise is where I’ll be
