The song, “End Of The World”, was originally recorded by Skeeter Davis in 1962
“End Of The World” is a song written by Arthur Kent (1920-2009) and Sylvia Dee (1914-1967) for American singer Mary Frances Penick (1931-2004), better known as Skeeter Davis. It was released in December 1962 and became her sixth top ten hit on the US country songs chart, but more importantly, became a big hit on the singles chart, reaching No.2. The song made No.18 in the UK.
The Carpenters recorded a version in 1975, but the only other notable version that was released as a single, came from Britain’s Sonia (Evans). “End Of The World” was recorded for her debut album with producers Stock Aitken Waterman and released as the fifth single in August 1990, ironically peaking at the same position as Davis’ original, No.18!
But whose version is the best? SKEETER DAVIS’ original or SONIA’s cover?
