What was the number one song in the UK on 28th November 1970?
British singer Dave Edmunds, got to number one for 6 weeks with I Hear You Knocking.
Originally written by rhythm and blues artist Dave Bartholomew and recorded by New Orleans singer Smiley Lewis in 1955, Dave Edmunds’ version offers a rock version with a faster tempo of I Hear You Knocking. The original song was more piano based whereas Edmunds’ version is guitar based. The vocal has a slight automatic, distant feel to it, probably because it was recorded via a telephone line. There are hints of glam rock, which will soon burst on to the scene. It’s simple rock ‘n’ roll tune which honours its rhythm and blues roots.
Lyrics
You went away and left me long time ago
Now you’re knocking on my door
I hear you knocking, but you can’t come in
I hear you knocking, go back where you beenI begged you not to go but you said goodbye
And now you’re telling me all your lies
I hear you knocking, but you can’t come in
I hear you knocking, go back where you been, oh yeahYou better get back to your used-to-be
‘Cause you’re kinda love ain’t good for me
I hear you knocking, but you can’t come in
I hear you knocking, go back where you beenI told you way back in Fifty-two
That I would never go with you
I hear you knocking but you can’t come in
I hear you knocking, go back where you been
