EVERY UK NUMBER ONE SONG: ‘Hot Love’ – T. Rex

What was the number one song in the UK on 20th March 1971?

British rock band T. Rex, reached number one for 6 weeks with Hot Love.

T. Rex’s first number one song and their subsequent Top of the Pops performance (dressed in a shiny, satin outfit and glittery make-up) were marked as the triggers for Glam Rock. It’s a song that does standout compared to many that I’ve reviewed recently. Hot Love is understandably a popular song that has built a consensus of affection towards it. The lalalalas at the end of the song do go on for a lot longer than what I remember though, were they struggling to work out how to end it or were they copying Hey Jude in a slightly different style maybe?

Lyrics

Well, she’s my woman of gold
And she’s not very old, ah, ah, ah
Well, she’s my woman of gold
And she’s not very old, ah, ah, ah
I don’t mean to be bold, but may I hold your handWell, she ain’t no witch
And I love the way she twitch, ah, ah, ah
Well, she ain’t no witch
And I love the way she twitch, ah, ah, ah
I’m a laborer of love in my Persian gloves, ah, ah, ahWell, she’s faster than most
And she lives on the coast, ah, ah, ah
Well, she’s faster than most
And she lives on the coast, ah, ah, ah
I’m her two penny prince and I give her hot love, ah, ah, ah
Take it down on me, mamaOw, aw, ahWell, she ain’t no witch
And I love the way she twitch, ah, ah, ah
Well, she ain’t no witch
And I love the way she twitch, ah, ah, ah
I’m her two penny prince and I give her hot love, ah, ah, ahLa la la, la la la la
La la la, la la la la
La la la, la la la la
La la la, la la la la
