The song, “Love Don’t Live Here Anymore”, was originally recorded by Rose Royce in 1978
“Love Don’t Live Here Anymore” was written by Norman Whitfield (1940-2008) and Paul Buckmaster (1946-2017) and recorded by 70’s Soul/R&B group Rose Royce for their third studio album, “Strikes Again”. It was released in November 1978 and peaked at No.2 in the UK and No.32 in America.
British actor turned singer Jimmy Nail (b.1954) recorded a version in 1985 for his debut album, “Take It Or Leave It”. It was released as his very first single in March that year, reaching No.3 in the UK and No.5 in Ireland.
The other significant version of the song was recorded by Madonna for her 1984 album, “Like A Virgin“, although it is best associated with her greatest ballad hits collection, “Something To Remember”, in 1995. On limited release, her version made No.78 in the US and No.27 in Australia in 1996.
But whose is the best? ROSE ROYCE’s original, JIMMY NAIL’s cover or MADONNA’s cover?
