Yvonne Elliman

COVER vs ORIGINAL: ‘Love Pains’

The song, “Love Pains”, was originally recorded by Yvonne Elliman in 1979

Disco anthem, “Love Pains”, was written by Michael Price, Dan Walsh and Steve Barri (b.1942), who also produced the song, for American singer Yvonne Elliman (b.1951). The song was recorded for her sixth studio album, “Yvonne”, and released as the lead single in September, making No.34 in the US.

The song has been covered and released twice since. First by actress and performer Liza Minnelli for her 1989 Pet Shop Boys produced album, “Results”. It was released as the fourth and final single in February 1990 and just missed the UK top 40, stopping at No.41 as well as being a moderately charting single in Germany and Italy.

The song was also recorded in 1989 by British pop-dance singer Hazell Dean. Her version was actually released that year in August but could only get as far as No.48 in the UK and No.51 in The Netherlands, where the original had reached No.22, ten years earlier.

But whose version is the best? YVONNE’s original, LIZA’s ‘result’ or HAZELL’s cover?
