Heart alone

The song, “Alone”, was originally recorded by i-Ten in 1983

Soft rock ballad “Alone” was written and recorded by Billy Steinberg (b.1950) and Tom Kelly (b.1952) under the name of i-Ten in 1983 for their album, “Taking A Cold Look”. It was never released as a single and the album performed poorly. It was as songwriters that they would receive acclaim and exposure of the song as they established themselves throughout the 1980’s as hitmakers.

US band Heart worked with Steinberg and Kelly on their 1987 album, “Bad Animals” and recorded the song releasing it as a single in May that year. This new version became an instant smash and topped the charts in America and Canada and a top ten placing in more than a dozen other counties, including the UK, where it became their first top ten hit there, peaking at No.3.

In 2007, Celine Dion recorded a version of “Alone” for her album “Taking Chances“. It was released as the fourth and final single in 2008 and charted in the UK, the US and Canada, while the album had already been a huge success globally, prior to its release.

But whose version is the best? i-TEN’s original, HEART’s rock ballad or CELINE’s cover?
