Brother Beyond

WHERE ARE THEY NOW? Brother Beyond

The harder they tried, they found there ain’t no competition. But, when will we see Brother Beyond again?

It took British boy band Brother Beyond a while to find their feet in the music business and it was thanks to dream making producer Stock Aitken Waterman that they finally achieved chart success and the cover of Smash Hits magazine. The original foursome – Nathan Moore (b.1965), David White (b.1965), Carl Fysh (b.1963) and Eg White (b.1966) – got together in 1985 and wrote their own songs from the word go. They released their debut single, “I Should Have Lied”, in 1986 although this did nothing whatsoever chart wise. Eg left the band at the end of 1986 to be replaced by Steve Alexander (b.1962) with the new lineup achieving three top 75 singles during 1987, the highest of which, “Can You Keep A Secret?”, making No.56. But true success was badly needed…

…enter hit makers Mike Stock, Matt Aitken and Pete Waterman. Already well known for acts like Bananarama, Mel and Kim, Rick Astley and Kylie Minogue, the hit factory trio write and produced two new brand new songs for them in 1988 taking on a Motown sound that also veered away from their own tried and trusted brand of Euro pop. “The Harder I Try” was the first and saw release in June that year. With their own clever marketing and promotion, “The Harder I Try” soon shot up the top 40 to place itself at No.2 for two weeks that Summer, only being held off the top by Yazz and Phil Collins. The song was also a success across much of Europe and topped the Irish singles chart.

The second recording, “He Ain’t No Competition”, did similar business when released in September, peaking at No.6 in the UK and No.4 in Ireland and although “The Harder I Try” had not been a success ‘down under’, “Competition” managed to make it to No.53 in Australia, much higher than its predecessor. Before the year was out, Brother Beyond released their two-year in production debut album, “Get Even”, which would break into the UK top ten and eventually sell over 300,000 copies. 1989 would see the Carl Fysh penned “Be My Twin” add a third top 40 hit to the list when it climbed to No.14 and a remixed “Can You Keep A Secret?” would take that tally to four in April with a No.22 position attained second tike around.

Wasting no time now they were in the spotlight and with “Get Even” material now two years old, Brother Beyond returned to the studio and began writing for themselves once more, releasing a brand new single, “Drive On”, in August 1989. Interest was not forthcoming and the song barely scrapped into the UK top 40. A cover of The Three Degrees classic “When Will I See You Again?” did little to attract old fans back when it stalled at No.43, prior to the release of the second album, “Trust”, at the end of 1989. The title track and “The Girl I Used to Know”, both released in 1990 put the band back to chart positions they had been used to pre-“Harder” while the album flopped big time. Brother Beyond called it a day in early 1991 and that was that.

Lead singer and heartthrob Nathan Moore was hardly finished as he joined another boy band, Worlds Apart, in 1993 and continued to enjoy huge success across mainland Europe for the rest of the 90’s and still tours and records with the remaining three members of the original group. Steve Alexander toured with none other than Duran Duran for a number of years before forming a writing and recording partnership with former Yardbirds guitarist Jeff Beck. Carl Fysh remains in the industry but in public relations. His tally of Platinum selling acts includes Adele, Goldfrapp and Coldplay! David White left the industry and spends his time painting while original member (and ‘brother’) Eg hasn’t done too bad for himself either having written and produced songs for the like of Will Young, Celine Dion, Take That and Kylie!
