Kate Bush 1991

COVER vs ORIGINAL: ‘Rocket Man’

The song, “Rocket Man”, was originally recorded by Elton John in 1972

The lengthy decision to either live in space or on earth, “Rocket Man”, was written by Elton John and Bernie Taupin for Elton’s 1972 album, “Honky Château”. It was released as the lead single in April that year and peaked at No.2 in the UK, where it holds a Platinum certification for sales of more than 600,000 copies, and No.6 in America, where it has sold over three million copies.

Kate Bush reworked the song in reggae style for the album, “Two Rooms: Celebrating the Songs Of Elton John & Bernie Taupin”, in 1991. She released her version in November that year as a single, which reached No.12 in the UK and No.2 in Australia, making No.11 on the US Alternative play chart. The song has regularly been listed as one of the greatest cover versions of any song, although Elton has never commented on this.

So whose version is the best? ELTON’s original or KATE’s cover?
