THEN & NOW: ‘Just Can’t Get Enough’ – 40 Years Of Depeche Mode

2021 has seen the 40th anniversary of the release of Depeche Mode’s first single, “Dreaming Of Me”, and their debut album, “Speak & Spell”.

Formed in Essex the previous year, Vince Clarke, Andy Fletcher and Martin Gore were soon joined by lead vocalist Dave Gahan and with only one other line up change since then, Gahan, Fletcher and Gore have gone on to sell over 100 million records worldwide!

Although Vince Clarke didn’t stick around long, he hasn’t done too bad for himself, forming Yazoo with Alison Moyet in 1982 and two years later, Erasure, with Andy Bell, with whom he still works with today.

The Mode formula has rarely changed or diverged horrifically from their known style and the band have managed to stay ahead and often in front of the competition through the 90’s, 00’s and well into the 2010’s. Their most recent album, “Spirit” (2017), was a top five success around the world and the supporting tour saw them play to over three million fans over a fourteen month period on the road.
