Depeche Mode personal jesus

COVER vs ORIGINAL: ‘Personal Jesus’

The song, “Personal Jesus”, was originally recorded by Depeche Mode in 1989

“Personal Jesus” was written by Martin Gore of Depeche Mode and recorded by the group in 1989 for their album, “Violator“, which was released the following year. The track was the lead single from the project and saw release in August 1989, peaking at No.13 in the UK, No.28 in the US and was a top ten hit across much of the rest of the world. The song’s acclaim has grown over the decades and is now cited as one of the group’s very best.

In 2002, Country music legend, Johnny Cash (1932-2003), recorded a Gospel/Folk/Country version of the song for his album, “American IV: The Man Comes Around”, while “Personal Jesus” was covered by US rock band, Marilyn Manson, in 2004 for their greatest hits album, “Lest We Forget: The Best Of…” and was released as a single in September that year, reaching No.2 on the US Rock chart and, once again, No.13 in the UK, as well as being a top twenty hit across the rest of the world.

But which version is the best? DEPECHE MODE’s original or MARILYN MANSON’s Cover?
