Lisabel returns with “Never Afraid”
Folk-Pop, Acoustic
Our friend, London based singer and songwriter Lisabel, has recently released what she calls her ‘come back single’, “Never Afraid”, a song about women’s resilience in moments of social injustice, harassment and violence.
“Never Afraid” portrays women and their call for action in regards to their equality and safety in a world in which we too often see and hear news about women related violence and crime.
Sonically, the simple arrangement of piano, vocals and orchestral percussions such as timpani and cymbals, leaves space to Lisabel’s vocals to express the lyrics with confidence, power but also softness and a hint of what could be perceived as anger and sadness. The layered harmonies which structurally create the ‘wordless chorus’, give an ethereal feel to the song, almost capturing the elegance and strength of women in pursuit of their freedom and a time for change.
Lisabel wrote and produced “Never Afraid” herself along with London based producer Nikola Kovačević. The track is released under their label Brother Sun Sister Moon Productions.
Lisabel is a contemporary soul, jazz and pop singer songwriter based in London. She has studied in various music schools around the world, attending lectures and summer courses at Berklee College of Music, LCCM London, Guildhall School of Music and Drama, Umbria Jazz Berklee Clinics and lastly BIMM London, from which she gained a degree in performance. During her first years in London, Lisabel grew and interest in Jazz and its contemporary sub-genres including Soul, Neo-Soul and New Jazz, especially listening to artists such as Hiatus Kaiyote, Robert Glasper, Becca Stevens, Gretchen Parlato, Jordan Rakei, Emily King and more. In 2020 Lisabel released her debut album, “A Work Of Art“, which we reviewed as well as the singles that preceded it.
In her songwriting, Lisabel is driven by an urge to be boundaryless in genre. Her songwriting is intimate and introspective, often depicting personal stories about her life, her relationships, the power of nature and the social environment around her. Her arrangements are often characterised by the use of acoustic, clean instruments mixed in with synthesizers and electronic sounding instruments also due to her long time collaborator and producer Nikola Kovačević who uses synthesizers in his work extensively. Lisabel has had a chance to play in some of London’s most renowned venues such as The Half Moon, Pizza Express Jazz Club (Soho and Chelsea), O2 Academy Islington, 606 Jazz Club, The Workshop & Roadtrip, The Water Rats, Novikov Lounge, Jak’s Chelsea, The Ned London, The Savage Garden, Primo Bar, The Rocksteady, The Spice of Life and The Bedford Balham.
