COVER vs ORIGINAL: ‘Relight My Fire’

The song, “Relight My Fire”, was originally recorded by Dan Hartman in 1979

Disco anthem “Relight My Fire” was written, produced and performed by Dan Hartman (1950-1994) – he of “Instant Replay“. It formed the title of his third studio album in 1979 and was released as the third single, as a double A sider with “Vertigo”, in early 1980. The songs peaked at No.105 on the US singles chart and No.1 on the dance chart. It reached the top ten in The Netherlands, but otherwise was not a commercial success.

In 1993, British boy band Take That recorded the song for their second studio album, “Everything Changes”. This version featured singer Lulu, who had made a comeback earlier that year with “Independence”, and was released as the second single in September. It became the bands second UK number one and was a top ten hit across most of mainland Europe, paving the way for the album to become a huge success upon release a few weeks later that same month.

But which version is the best? DAN HARTMAN’s original or TAKE THAT’s cover?
