UK Top 40 Singles Chart for Sunday 30th May 1993

So this was the chart that Radio 1 DJ Bruno Brookes broadcast from 4pm-7pm with data from the GALLUP computer based on record sales from Monday 24th to Saturday 29th May 1993.

This is how the charts USED to look with new entries, climbers and non-movers, all based solely on record purchases.
This week, thirty years ago, there were ten new entrys, one re-entry, six climbers and three non-movers! And it was announced like this…

40. Sonia – “Better The Devil You Know”
Eurovision is over for another year and Sonia did well with her entry and also the song, which is the charting since Belle and The Devotions’ “Love Games” in 1984! But she suffers a massive slump of twenty five places this week.

39. Q featuring Tracy Ackerman – “Get Here”
Q is producer Mark Taylor and along with singer Tracy Ackerman they bring Brenda Russell’s “Get Here” back to the UK chart, having previously gone top five in 1991 when Oleta Adams did it.

38. Marc Cohen – “Walking Through The World”
The last time Marc Cohen was in the UK top 40 he made it nearly to the top of the top thirty. But not this time as his latest drops back one place.

37. Loni Clark – “Rushing”
We welcome American singer Loni Clark to the UK top 40 for the first time this week as her debut solo single lands a new entry.

36. Utah Saints – “Believe In Me”
The Utah Saints drop fifteen places with their latest top ten hit, their third since “What Can You Do For Me?” last Spring.

35. Snow – “Informer”
Snow has been informing for over three months now with his debut single, which remains top 40 here but also down fifteen places.

34. Sub Sub featuring Melanie Williams – “Ain’t No Love, Ain’t No Use”
And also dropping fifteen are Sub Sub featuring Melanie Williams with their debut chart hit, with nine weeks on so far.

33. Alice In Chains – “Angry Chair”
Alice In Chains come back to the UK top 40 with a new entry. This is the follow up to “Them Bones” from just a few weeks ago.

32. Megadeth – “Sweating Bullets”
The rock doesn’t stop as Megadeth are up next and following a new entry last week, they go down six places with their latest.

31. Lenny Kravitz – “Believe”
We believed in Lenny Kravitz so much last week that he was the highest climber. But seven days later and the song slips one place.

30. Barbra Streisand – “With One Look”
Barbra Streisand returns to the UK top 40 this week. This is the first song to come from a new album she has coming out, all of hit musicals on Broadway.

29. Dina Carroll – “Express”
The best selling single yet from Dina Carroll leaves the top twenty and goes down twelve places after four weeks on the chart. Her debut album has now sold over 300,000 copies!

28. Whitney Houston – “I Have Nothing”
Down ten goes Whitney Houston with the latest song from ‘The Bodyguard’ soundtrack, seven weeks since her arrival with it.

27. Mica Paris – “I Wanna Hold On To You”
Back with more new music is Mica Paris with this new entry that follows closely behind “I Never Felt Like This Before”. Her new album comes out next month.

26. Tasmin Archer – “Lords Of The New Church”
Going the other way is Tasmin Archer with her latest as she goes up seven places to give her a third top thirty charting single.

25. Saint Etienne – “Who Do You Think You Are?”
Having gone up in their second week, Saint Etienne come back down again with a fall of two places with this double A sider with “Hobart Paving”.

24. Sade – “No Ordinary Love”
A number of songs from last year have returned to the chart in 1993 and done much better second time around and Sade are one of them with this re-entry that goes in higher than it did last September!

23. Bryan Ferry – “Will You Love Me Tomorrow?”
Roxy Music’s Bryan Ferry has a good second week with his latest cover version that climbs eight places. It comes from his latest album called “Taxi”.

22. a-ha – “Dark Is The Night”
a-ha are back with new music this week and a new album, their fourth, is on the way too. This is the lead single that gives them their first UK top 40 hit since “Crying In The Rain” in 1990.

21. Guns’N’Roses – “Civil War” (EP)
Guns’N’Roses’ war seems to have been lost as their highest new entry from last week drops ten places and out of the upper half of the chart.

20. Tears For Fears – “Break It All Down”
Coming into the top twenty with their new single are Tears For Fears, as they go up five places after a new entry last week.

19. Stereo MC’s – “Creation”
And getting a fourth top twenty hit in a row are the Stereo MC’s as they also climb five places. It was last August they started the trend with “Connected”.

18. Haddaway – “What Is Love?”
Making his UK chart debut is Trinidad born German singer Haddaway with his debut single, which is already flying high across Europe and now it hits the UK top 40.

17. Shabba Ranks and Maxi Priest – “Housecall”
One of the other 1992 singles to make it big this year comes from Shabba Ranks and Maxi Priest, they go down this week, four places.

16. The Jungle Book – “The Jungle Book Groove”
And after four weeks swinging ever higher in the trees, “The Jungle Book Groove” drops down two branches this week.

15. Bon Jovi – “In These Arms”
Also going down are Bon Jovi with their latest top ten hit, which is no more and is six places lower than it has been for the past two weeks.

14. REM – “Everybody Hurts”
This ballad from REM has been around for two months now and it’s still top twenty, the band are down four places with it this week.

13. Lisa Stansfield – “In All The Right Places”
Lisa Stansfield returns with a new song and a big new entry. Like “Someday (I’m Coming Back)”, this is also from a film and it’s co-written by composer John Barry.

12. Jamiroquai – “Blow Your Mind”
Jamiroquai are back with another top twenty chart entry. This is their second following on from “Too Young To Die” and it will feature on their debut album, which is out next month.

11. House Of Pain – “Jump Around”
The highest ranking re-release from 1992 comes from House Of Pain and they just slip out of the top ten this week, down three places.

10. Janet Jackson – “That’s The Way Love Goes”
The new single from Janet Jackson gets a fifth week in the top ten as it falls four places, having been a non-mover for the last two weeks.

9. Tina Turner – “I Don’t Wanna Fight”
Also going down is the new single from Tina Turner, which is down two places. The song is co-written by none other than Lulu!

8. 2 Unlimited – “Tribal Dance”
2 Unlimited continue to do their tribal dance, but they do so three places lower, five weeks after joining the chart.

7. Louchie Lou and Michie One – “Shout (It Out)”
Louchie Lou and Michie One arrived on the chart last week with their version of this 1959 original from The Isley Brothers and week two finds them going up nine places, which is the highest of all.

6. George Michael, Queen and Lisa Stansfield – “Five Live” (EP)
Here comes Lisa Stansfield again along with George and Queen with their former number one, which is down two this week.

5. Green Jelly – “Three Little Pigs”
We welcome American band Green Jelly to the UK chart this week with their debut single and what a debut as this is the highest new entry!

4. The Spin Doctors – “Two Princes”
Four weeks in and The Spin Doctors are still climbing with their biggest UK single to date. They go up eight this week and into the top five.

3. Inner Circle – “Sweat (A La La La La Long)”
Inner Circle are still sweating it out. They can’t seem to move at all and get a third consecutive week in third place as a non-mover.

2. UB40 – “I Can’t Help Falling In Love With You”
Also non-movers for a second week in second place are UB40 with their re-titled version of Elvis‘ old song from the film ‘Sliver’.

1. Ace Of Base – “All That She Wants…”
Which means for a third week running it’s Ace Of Base who claim top prize as the biggest seller in the UK with their very first hit single. Can they make it a whole month on top, or will The Spin Doctors, Green Jelly or someone else stop them? There’s only one way to find out…
