Thirty years since she came second, Sonia has returned to the stage to perform her 1993 UK Eurovision entry, “Better The Devil You Know”, at the 2023 Eurovision final in her adopted town of Liverpool. The former Stock Aitken Waterman singer sparkled as she worked the stage with the song that she was chosen to represent the country with three decades ago.
Sonia was one of the performing acts while the votes were being counted along with Sam Ryder, last years runner up, with his new song, “Mountain”. “Better The Devil You Know” was written by Brian Teasdale and Dean Collinson, and produced by Nigel Wright (Take That, Cliff Richard) and came in second at the Contest held in Millstreet, Ireland, the second time in two years that the UK had been runner up in the competition.
On the charts, “Better The Devil You Know” went up and down a few times before reaching No.15, the highest charting Eurovision song since Belle and The Devotions‘ “Love Games” in 1984. Sonia retained the song’s Motown sound production for her 2023 live performance, and dressed in a glamourous purple number, she was clearly very happy to be back on home territory and supporting her country once again.
