UK Top 40 Singles Chart for 23rd June 1985
So this was the chart that Radio 1 DJ Richard Skinner broadcast from 5pm-7pm with data from the GALLUP computer based on record sales.
This is how the charts USED to look with new entries, climbers and non-movers, all based solely on record purchases. This week there were seven new entrys, sixteen climbers and one non-mover! And it was announced like this…
40. DeBarge – “Rhythm Of The Night” The beat of the rhythm of the night is fading and with a fall of thirteen places, this could be DeBarge’s last week in the top 40 for now…
39. Phyllis Nelson – “Move Closer” Phyllis Nelson is also moving much closer to the exit door as she goes down ten places, with over three months on the top 40 with her very first hit single.
38. Glenn Frey – “Smugglers Blues” The heat is on for Glenn Frey to at least match his last hit as he comes back with this weeks first new entry and with the other track from the ‘Beverly Hills Cop’ film still on the chart.
37. Opus – “Live Is Life” Austrian rock band Opus got together in 1973 and released their first album in 1980. Their fifth is on the way and this track comes from it and gives them their very first UK top 40 chart entry.
36. Denise LaSalle – “My Toot Toot” Meanwhile, American singer Denise LaSalle made her debut back in 1967 and she has quite a few US chart hits to her name, but until today, none here in the UK, which all changes with this new entry.
35. The Cult – “She Sells Sanctuary” Keeping up with the chart debuts, British band The Cult make their first appearance on the top 40 today with their fifth single but first to make it this far.
34. Dead Or Alive – “In Too Deep” Dead Or Alive did that at the beginning of the year with “You Spin Me Round“. They’ve had a top twenty hit since then, so could this be number three…?
33. The Redskins – “(Burn It Up) Bring It Down” The Redskins made their chart entry last week with this song and seven days later it goes up five places as they head for another top ten hit.
32. Elton John and Millie Jackson – “Act Of War” Elton John and Millie Jackson also got a new entry last week together. But a week later and the war seems to be on stop as they are non-movers.
31. Go West – “Call Me” Let’s see how long it takes for Go West to call back again with the follow up to this single, which, eight weeks on, falls eight places.
30. The Conway Brothers – “Turn It Up” American group The Conway Brothers move into the top thirty in their second week and they go up nine places with their brand new track.
29. The Damned – “The Shadow Of Love” As do The Damned with their latest, which climbs eight places to put them back in the top thirty for the second time this year.
28. David Bowie – “Loving The Alien” David Bowie loved his alien for two weeks in the top twenty which he was also a non-mover for both of them. His alien flies away and so does he, nine places lower in space.
27. Stephen ‘Tin Tin’ Duffy – “Icing On The Cake” Following Bowie is Stephen ‘Tin Tin’ Duffy with his second chart hit of this year, which slides off the cake and down seven places.
26. Sting – “If You Love Somebody Set Them Free” The debut solo single from Sting goes up again this week, this time just two places higher that before and with every breath it takes(!)
25. Propoganda – “Duel” For the past three weeks, Propoganda have been propping up the top twenty with this tune but they have been relieved of that duty as the song falls four places.
24. Katrina and The Waves – “Walking On Sunshine” Katrina and The Waves walk out of the top twenty this week with their very first top 40 hit, down seven places, in their seventh week!
23. The Commentators – “N-n-nineteen (Not Out)” In a hilarious spin on the recent number one form Paul Hardcastle, British impressionist Rory Brenmer puts his own spin on the track with various sporting commentaror’s vocals for this new entry!
22. Howard Jones – “Life In One Day” Once again Howard Jones is the highest new entry of his first week in the top 40 and this is his third to do so this year, all from his latest album, “Dream Into Action”.
21. Five Star – “All Fall Down” All five of Five Star fall down together and fall out of the top twenty this week. A fall of three places takes them out.
20. Gary Moore and Phil Lynott – “Out In The Fields” Gary Moore and Phil Lynott remain in the upper half of the chart this week as their joint collaboration goes down four places.
19. China Crisis – “King In A Catholic Style” Enjoying a much better third week on the chart are China Crisis, who come back to the top twenty with a climb of seven places.
18. Prince – “Paisley Park” And also back in the UK top twenty is Prince with his latest, the follow up to “Little Red Corvette”, which goes up four places.
17. Paul Young – “Tomb Of Memories” Doing much better than all of them is the latest from Paul Young, he is this week’s highest climber, going up thirteen places!
16. Paul Hardcastle – “19” Here’s the man with the original “N-n-n-nineteen”, the former chart topper from Paul Hardcastle falls just two places this week.
15. Duran Duran – “A View To A Kill” Also continuing to take a slow decent of the chart is the latest 007 song from Duran Duran, which for once is above Paul Hardcastle! They fall four places this week.
14. Tears For Fears – “Head Over Heels” Hoping for a third top ten hit this year are Tears For Fears, who were last week’s highest new entry and go up ten places a week later.
13. Animotion – “Obsession” American group Animotion‘s obsession with the UK top ten comes to an end as they slip five places and out after four weeks in.
12. Fine Young Cannibals – “Johnny Come Home” The debut single from the Fine Young Cannibals moves a little bit closer to the big ten this week as they go up three places.
11. Bruce Springsteen – “Born In The USA” While Mr. Bruce Springsteen goes up two to sit just outside the UK top ten with his latest. Let’s hope he won’t be dancing in the dark this time next week(!)
10. Scritti Politti – “The Word Girl” Time is up for Scritti Politti and their second top ten hit, which has been climbing for six weeks now, but reverses four places in its seventh.
9. Marti Webb – “Ben” Marti Webb comes into the top ten for the very first time this week with her cover of Michael Jackson’s “Ben”, which goes up three places.
8. Mai Tai – “History” Mai Tai continue to make UK chart history as their biggest hit here goes up another one place, duplicating what they did last week.
7. Marillion – “Kayleigh” Meanwhile, rockers Marillion’s biggest single yet falls three places and out of the top five, where they’ve been for four weeks.
6. Billy Ocean – “Suddenly” And just slipping out of the big five is Billy Ocean with his second to come from his current album, which is down just one place.
5. Kool and The Gang – “Cherish” We continue to cherish Kool and The Gang‘s current release as they return to the top five with a climb of two, making this their biggest since “Joanna” in 1983.
4. Harold Faltermeyer – “Axel F” Last week’s highest climber was this instrumental piece from composer Harold Faltermeyer from the film ‘Beverly Hills Cop’ and he improves upon that with a climb of four.
3. The Crowd – “You’ll Never Walk Alone” We do have a new number one as the celebrity line up who sing this version of “You’ll Never Walk Alone” for Bradford Football Club, fall two places and off the top, where they’ve been for two weeks.
2. Madonna – “Crazy For You” Going up one is Madonna, who can now claim a new UK chart high, bettering her two previous singles! Can she go one more…?
1. Sister Sledge – “Frankie” Also going up one are Sister Sledge to become this week’s new number one and also get their very first UK number one since they formed nearly two decades ago! But can they make it a second, or will Madonna, Harold Faltermeyer or Kool and his Gang put a stop to that? There’s only one way to find out…
