UK Top 40 Singles Chart for Sunday 22nd August 1993

So this was the chart that Radio 1 DJ Bruno Brookes broadcast from 4pm-7pm with data from the GALLUP computer based on record sales from Monday 16th to Saturday 21st August 1993.

This is how the charts USED to look with new entries, climbers and non-movers, all based solely on record purchases.
This week, thirty years ago, there were eleven new entrys, seven climbers and three non-movers! And it was announced like this…

40. Juliet Roberts – “Caught In The Middle”
Juliet Roberts gets caught in the UK top 40 for another week, but only just. Her latest goes down eleven places, five weeks on.

39. Visage – “Fade To Grey ’93”
It’s been a long time since Visage were last in the top 40, but they come back with a remix of their biggest and best known hit from 1980, which got to No.8 then.

38. M People – “One Night In Heaven”
M People are gearing up for their next new song, but before that, this one that’s been about for ten weeks is on the way out and down fourteen places.

37. Mary J Blige – “Real Love”
Mary J Blige is back with a new entry. This is her second UK top 40 charting single of 1993 and follows “Reminisce” back in January.

36. Dannii Minogue – “This Is It”
Kylie’s younger sister Dannii falls fourteen places with her cover of Melba Moore’s 70’s classic. Dannii has been about for seven weeks with this, but is this it?

35. Goodmen – “Give It Up”
The Goodmen drop ten places with their chart debut. They’ve been about for just four weeks with this single, which has been a bigger hit across Europe.

34. Lenny Kravitz – “Heaven Help”
Back with another cut from his “Are You Gonna Go My Way?” album is Lenny Kravitz. This is the third single from that album and his third to make to the top 40.

33. The Spin Doctors – “Two Princes”
Four months on and The Spin Doctors are still in the top 40. They’ve been going up the past two weeks, but fall back down nine a week on.

32. Haddaway – “What Is Love?”
Meanwhile, Haddaway has been around for just over three months with this monster hit and he’s down twelve and out of the top twenty.

31. Onyx – “Slam”
American hip hop group Onyx make their UK top 40 debut this week with their third single, which has already been a top five hit back home.

30. Tasmin Archer – “Arienne”
Tasmin Archer moves up one and into the top thirty this week with her latest. This is the fourth single to come from her debut album a year on from her first, which went to number one.

29. Sinclair – “Ain’t No Casanova”
Sinclair arrived on the chart last week but they take a much bigger climb of eight places, which is this week’s highest of all.

28. Bad Boys Inc. – “Don’t Talk About Love”
New boy band Bad Boys Inc. went top twenty with their debut single last week, but that is all it was to be as they slide nine seven days later.

27. Joey Lawrence – “I Can’t Help Myself”
US TV star Joey Lawrence debuted only two months ago with “Nothin’ My Love Can’t Fix”. Now he’s back and he can’t help himself this time with the follow up.

26. Madonna – “Rain”
The fifth top ten hit from “Erotica” goes down eleven this week for Madonna. The album is Platinum certified here now.

25. The Bee Gees – “Paying The Price Of Love”
The brand new single from The Bee Gees climbs five places in its second week. The trio first charted in 1967 with “New York Mining Disaster”.

24. Terence Trent D’Arby – “She Kissed Me”
Back for a third time this year is Terence Trent D’Arby with this new entry. It was back in 1987-88 that he last had a chart run of top 40 singles here in the UK.

23. Roxette – “Almost Unreal”
Per and Maria leave the top twenty this week, down seven places with their latest. The song has been their fifth to reach the top ten here.

22. Robin S – “Luv 4 Luv”
Robin S follows and falls four places with her second chart hit. The song has made No.2 on the Dance chart here. “Show Me Love” topped that chart.

21. Ace Of Base – “Wheel Of Fortune”
Former chart toppers Ace Of Base are back with the follow up to “All That She Wants”. Can fortune take them back to the top again…?

20. Gabrielle – “Dreams”
The debut single and former number one from Gabrielle falls seven this week. The 23 year old remains top twenty, where she came in.

19. The Sisters Of Mercy – “Under The Gun”
The Sisters Of Mercy are back with a top twenty new entry this week. This is a brand new tune that will feature on their upcoming best of collection called “A Slight Case Of Overbombing”.

18. The Pogues – “Tuesday Morning”
While on Sunday afternoon, The Pogues climb three places and into the top twenty for the first time in nearly six years!

17. Michelle Gayle – “Looking Up”
The debut single from actress and now pop star Michelle Gayle goes down six places having propped up the top ten for the past two weeks.

16. Chaka Demus and Pliers – “Tease Me”
While out of the top ten come Chaka Demus and Pliers with their long standing smash hit, which also goes down six places.

15. Take That – “Pray”
Another song going down six is the former number one from Take That, which also exits the top ten after six weeks there.

14. Tina Turner – “Disco Inferno”
Tina Turner is back with a second helping of the soundtrack to her new film biopic. This time she’s covered the 1976 hit by The Trammps which got to No.16 here on two occasions!

13. Therapy – “Opel Mantra”
Therapy get a new entry this week. This is their third single to enter in the top twenty and it’s also now their second highest charting.

12. Sarah Washington – “I Will Always Love You”
Sarah Washington’s version of Dolly and Whitney‘s hit single was last week’s highest climber, but she fails to find further footing and is a non-mover.

11. Aftershock – “Slave To The Vibe”
Dance act Aftershock arrived on the top 40 for the first time last week and their infectious club anthem rises six places in its second.

10. Mariah Carey – “Dreamlover”
Mariah Carey’s brand new single climbs four this week to put her back in the UK top ten for the third time in her career.

9. 4 Non Blondes – “What’s Up?”
While the 4 Non Blondes drop two places in their ninth week in the top ten with their debut chart hit here. Their album is called “Bigger, Better, Faster, More!”.

8. UB40 – “Higher Ground”
The highest new entry from last week from UB40 fails to go any higher and it’s a non-mover for the band who exit the chart with “I Can’t Help Falling In Love With You”.

7. SWV – “Right Here”
Right above them is this week’s highest new entry and it’s a big entrance for SWV as their third release here gives them their first top ten hit with a song that samples Michael Jackson’s “Human Nature”.

6. Apache Indian – “Nuff Vibes” (EP)
Time is up for Apache Indian’s vibes as he slips one place and out of the top five this week with his first big chart hit.

5. Billy Joel – “The River Of Dreams”
And down one also goes Billy Joel with his highest charting single for a decade. It’s the title track of his new album and it’s out now.

4. Urban Cookie Collective – “The Key, The Secret”
Having been number two for the past two weeks, the Urban Cookie Collective drop two places and away from the top spot.

3. Bitty McLean – “It Keeps Raining”
While Bitty McLean holds on to third place for a second week with his debut single, going nowhere but keeping out of the rain.

2. Freddie Mercury – “Living On My Own”
After two weeks on top, Freddie Mercury is no longer the biggest seller of all and he goes down one place with his posthumous chart topper.

1. Culture Beat – “Mr. Vain”
So we have a new number one and it’s up five for Germany’s Culture Beat as they take the top spot with their very first single released here. But can they keep it for a second, or will someone else claim their first number one this time next week? There’s only one way to find out…
