UK Top 40 Singles Chart for Sunday 29th August 1993

So this was the chart that Radio 1 DJ Bruno Brookes broadcast from 4pm-7pm with data from the GALLUP computer based on record sales from Monday 23rd to Satursay 28th August 1993.

This is how the charts USED to look with new entries, climbers and non-movers, all based solely on record purchases.
This week, thirty years ago, there were nine new entrys, eleven climbers and three non-movers! And it was announced like this…

40. Roxette – “Almost Unreal”
It’s almost unreal for Roxette this week as they stay top 40 with their latest, as they hang in there, down seventeen places.

39. Curve – “Blackerthreetracker” (EP)
Curve return to the top 40 this week with a new entry and an EP from them this time. This is their first showing of 1993.

38. Bad Boys Inc. – “Don’t Talk About Love”
Four weeks on and Bad Boys Inc. are down ten places with their debut single, having spent one week in the top twenty.

37. Rage Against The Machine – “Bombtrack”
There’s a new entry for Rage Against The Machine with the follow up to “Bullet In The Head” and the third to come from their self-titled debut album.

36. Robin S – “Luv 4 Luv”
Down fourteen places is Robin S with the follow up to “Show Me Love”. This one has lasted six weeks, but it could be her last…

35. Therapy – “Opal Mantra”
While down twenty two places is last week’s new entry from Therapy as they crash out of the top twenty and top thirty in one go!

34. Soul Asylum – “Somebody To Shove”
Soul Asylum come back quickly with this new entry, which is the follow up to “Runaway Train”, giving them a second top 40 hit here.

33. Michelle Gayle – “Looking Up”
Michelle Gayle is still looking up even though she’s looking down sixteen places with her debut single. Will the Eastenders actress some back for more…?

32. Onyx – “Slam”
Onyx drop down just one place with this song that was a new entry last week. It comes from their debut album titled “Bacdafucup”.

31. The Sisters Of Mercy – “Under The Gun”
Lots of last week’s new entries going down and The Sisters Of Mercy are another of them as they fall twelve from having debuted in the top twenty.

30. Gabrielle – “Dreams”
It’s three months since Gabrielle debuted with this song and took it to number one. Twelve weeks on and she falls ten places.

29. Joey Lawrence – “I Can’t Help Myself”
Yet another of last week’s new ones going down is the second single from TV star Joey Lawrence, as he falls two places.

28. Sinclair – “Ain’t No Casanova”
Meanwhile, still climbing steadily is Mike Sinclair. Week three finds him up one with his first UK top 40 charting single.

27. New Order – “World (The Price Of Love)”
There’s a new entry next for New Order with the third single to come from their latest album, “Republic”, their second to top the album chart.

26. Mary J Blige – “Real Love”
Bucking the trend, Mary J Blige was a new entry last week but she goes up eleven places with her latest, which is also her first top thirty entry!

25. The Pogues – “Tuesday Morning”
The Pogues spent just one Tuesday morning in the top twenty before their latest comes straight back out and down seven places.

24. Stone Temple Pilots – “Plush”
There’s a UK top 40 debut next for American band the Stone Temple Pilots with this, their second single, which will feature on their first album due at the end of next month.

23. The Bee Gees – “Paying The Price Of Love”
The Bee Gees move up two more places in their third week on the chart with their brand new single. Their new album is due out in two weeks time.

22. Take That – “Pray”
The former number one from Take That departs the top twenty this week, down seven places, after two months on the chart.

21. Lenny Kravitz – “Heaven Help”
The last single from Lenny Kravitz was the highest climber in its second week and he does it again with the follow up, which goes up thirteen places!

20. Ace Of Base – “Wheel Of Fortune”
Spinning the wheel of fortune are Ace Of Base and it takes them into the top twenty this week, but up only one place.

19. Chaka Demus and Pliers – “Tease Me”
Down three go Chaka Demus and Pliers, who are still top twenty, three months on from their arrival with their first hit single.

18. Terence Trent D’Arby – “She Kissed Me”
It’s three out of three for Terence Trent D’Arby this week as the third single from his current album goes top twenty and up six places!

17. Kenny Thomas – “Trippin’ On Your Love”
Kenny Thomas makes a return to the upper half of the chart this week with the follow up to “Stay”. This new entry is his highest since “Best Of You” two years ago.

16. Carter The Unstoppable Sex Machine – “Lean On Me I Won’t Fall Over”
Back for 1993 are Carter The Unstoppable Sex Machine with new music and they too get a big new entry, their first since “The Impossible Dream” late last year.

15. Sarah Washington – “I Will Always Love You”
She couldn’t quite get her version into the top ten and after two weeks on hold, Sarah Washington falls three the latest take on Dolly’s 1970 original.

14. Paul Weller – “Wild Wood”
Paul Weller returns with a second slice of his upcoming album, which is due out in just over a week’s time. And this is the title track itself.

13. 4 Non Blondes – “What’s Up?”
What’s up? Well, the 4 Non Blondes are out of the top ten this week. Down four places as the celebrate three months in the UK top 40.

12. Tina Turner – “Disco Inferno”
Moving up two places is Tina Turner with the second single from the soundtrack to her biopic film ‘What’s Love Got To Do With It?’.

11. Aftershock – “Slave To The Vibe”
While Aftershock have to slave it out for a second week in the notorious number eleven position as non-movers, unable to go any further.

10. 2 Unlimited – “Faces”
Ray and Anita are back and they are this week’s highest new entry with the latest 2 Unlimited single, the follow up to “Tribal Dance”.

9. Mariah Carey – “Dreamlover”
Mariah Carey moves up one this week with her brand new track. Her new album “Music Box” has just been released in America and comes out next week here.

8. UB40 – “Higher Ground”
There’s still no higher ground for UB40’s newest as they get a third consecutive week in the chart position they arrived!

7. Apache Indian – “Nuff Vibes” (EP)
Falling one this week is Apache Indian with his EP and his biggest hit single yet, “Boom Shakalack”, which serves as a bridge between his debut album and the next one.

6. Urban Cookie Collective – “The Key, The Secret”
The Urban Cookie Collective have had the key to the top five for the past four weeks but do so no longer as they go down two places.

5. SWV – “Right Here”
Goin up two are last week’s highest new entry from SWV – Sisters With Voices – with the remix of their debut single from last year with a bit of help from Michael Jackson.

4. Freddie Mercury – “Living On My Own”
While down two goes the former number one from Freddie Mercury, six weeks on the chart and all in the top five for his biggest solo hit single.

3. Billy Joel – “The River Of Dreams”
Billy Joel went down last week but he goes up two places a week later which makes this a new high for the title track of his current album.

2. Bitty Mclean – “It Keeps Raining”
Bitty Mclean on the other hand has been a non-mover for the last two weeks and like Billy, his single is on the move, he’s up one place with his debut release.

1. Culture Beat – “Mr. Vain”
But not going anywhere for a second week are Culture Beat who are the biggest sellers of all here in the UK. Can they make it three in a row, or will Bitty, Billy or SWV get right here this time next week? There’s only one way to find out…
