UK Top 40 Singles Chart for Sunday 5th September 1993

So this was the chart that Radio 1 DJ Bruno Brookes broadcast from 4pm-7pm with data from the GALLUP computer based on record sales from Monday 30th August to Saturday 4th September 1993.

This is how the charts USED to look with new entries, climbers and non-movers, all based solely on record purchases.
This week, thirty years ago, there were nine new entrys, two re-entry’s, five climbers and four non-movers! And it was announced like this…

40. Soul Asylum – “Somebody To Shove”
The follow up to Soul Asylum’s previous top 40 charting single, can do no better as week two finds it going down six places.

39. Joey Lawrence – “I Can’t Help Myself”
Three weeks on and Joey Lawrence is still with us, and he’s down too, ten for him with the follow up to “Nothin’ My Love Can’t Fix”.

38. The Bee Gees – “Paying The Price Of Love”
The Bee Gees are paying the price this week as their brand new single drops fifteen places, having been steady climbers for the last three.

37. Shades Of Rhythm – “The Sound Of Eden”
Shades Of Rhythm come back to the top 40 this week with a re-issue of their first chart hit from 1991, which peaked two places higher. So can they beat that a second time around?

36. Take That – “Pray”
Nine weeks on and the first number one single from Take That stays with us, but down fourteen places. The boys have a new one not far away.

35. Duran Duran – “Too Much Information”
There’s a new entry next for Duran Duran with the third cut from their big comeback album of this year, which gives them three top 40 charting singles from it.

34. Guru feat. N’dea Davenport – “Trust Me”
American rapper and producer Keith Elam goes by the name of Guru and he debuts on the UK top 40 this week with some help from the Brand New Heavies singer N’dea Davenport.

33. Carter The Unstoppable Sex Machine – “Lean On Me I Won’t Fall Over”
The song says they may not fall over, but the new single from Carter The Unstoppable Sex Machine does fall in its second week, down seventeen places.

32. Chaka Demus and Pliers – “Tease Me”
Still teasing fourteen weeks on are Chaka Demus and Pliers as their debut hit remains top 40 and down thirteen places.

31. Gabrielle – “Dreams”
Down just one is the debut single and former number one from Gabrielle as she makes it a thirteenth week but with the follow up coming very soon.

30. Texas – “So Called Friend”
We welcome Texas back to the top 40 this week with something new. The band haven’t been seen since their cover of “Tired Of Being Alone” last Spring.

29. Bjork – “Venus As A Boy”
Former Sugarcubes singer Bjork gets a new entry with another slice of her debut album. This is the follow up to “Human Behaviour”.

28. Mary J Blige – “Real Love”
Dropping two places is the highest charting single so far from American singer Mary J Blige and her first to go top thirty here.

27. Sarah Washington – “I Will Always Love You”
Sarah Washington’s version of Dolly Parton’s original leaves the top twenty this week, down twelve places with five weeks on the chart.

26. Zhane – “Her Mr. DJ”
American duo Zhane make their UK chart debut this week and this is their debut single, which has already gone top ten across the Atlantic.

25. Motorhead – “Ace Of Spades”
Making a return to the top 40 after an absence of thirteen years is Motorhead’s “Ace Of Spades”. First time it went to No.15 so can they better that this time…?

24. Moby – “Move”
Producer Moby gets a new entry this week, his third to make the UK top 40 and doing much better than his last one, “I Feel It”, achieved.

23. The Stone Temple Pilots – “Plush”
Good news for The Stone Temple Pilots as their new release climbs one place having been a new entry this time last week.

22. Ace Of Base – “Wheel Of Fortune”
The wheel of fortune does not spin in Ace Of Base‘s favour as the follow up to their big number one of this year drops two places.

21. Lenny Kravitz – “Heaven Help”
Lenny Kravitz was last week’s highest climber and he was hoping for a top twenty move this week, but alas he is just a non-mover.

20. 4 Non Blondes – “What’s Up?”
The 4 Non Blondes remain top twenty this week, down seven places. The song has been in the upper half of the UK chart for three months now.

19. Paul Weller – “Wild Wood”
Going the same way is Paul Weller’s new entry from last week, which falls five places. It’s the title track of his next album.

18. James – “Sometimes”
We welcome James back to the chart this week with a brand new song and a new album on the way as well. This is their first top twenty hit since “Born Of Frustration” early last year.

17. Kenny Thomas – “Tripping On Your Love”
Kenny Thomas got his first top twenty hit for two years with this song last week, but seven days on and he fails to make good with it and is a non-mover.

16. Terence Trent D’Arby – “She Kissed Me”
Leapfrogging Kenny is Terence Trent D’Arby, who continues to shine with the latest track from his “Symphony Or Damn” album, which goes up two places.

15. Tina Turner – “Disco Inferno”
Going the other way is Tina Turner with the latest single from her movie biopic. Her cover of The Trammps song goes down three places.

14. Aftershock – “Slave To The Vibe”
Also down three are Aftershock, having been non-movers in the fatal number eleven spot for the last two weeks and not making it into the top ten.

13. New Order – “World (The Price Of Love)”
It’s been a great week for New Order, they return to the top twenty with their latest single, which goes up fourteen places to be this week’s highest climber!

12. DJ Jazzy Jeff and The Fresh Prince – “Boom Shake The Room”
Back in a big way are DJ Jazzy Jeff and The Fresh Prince this week with a new entry, and their first top twenty hit here since “Summertime” in 1991.

11. UB40 – “Higher Ground”
UB40 are at last on the move, having been stuck in the same spot for the last three weeks since they were the highest new entry, the band go down three places.

10. Mariah Carey – “Dreamlover”
We start the top ten with another non-mover going down, the new single from Mariah Carey, which drops one place in its third week in the big ten.

9. Apache Indian – “Nuff Vibes” (EP)
Boom shak-a-lak! Apache Indian goes down two places with his highest charting song to date and the others that accompany this EP.

8. 2 Unlimited – “Faces”
Going up two is the highest new entry from last week from 2 Unlimited. This is Ray and Anita’s sixth top ten hit here out of seven released.

7. Urban Cookie Collective – “The Key, The Secret”
The Urban Cookie Collective slip one this week with their debut chart hit, which notches up ten weeks on the chart, eight of them in the top ten.

6. Freddie Mercury – “Living On My Own”
The former number one from Freddie Mercury goes down two places and out of the top five. The track features on a new album called “Remixes”.

5. Nirvana – “Heart Shaped Box”
We welcome Nirvana back to the UK top ten this week with the highest new entry, which is their first and highest since “Come As You Are”, at the beginning of 1992.

4. Billy Joel – “The River Of Dreams”
Billy Joel went back up last week and he comes back down again this week, just one place this time and out of the top three.

3. SWV – “Right Here”
Continuing to improve on their already best UK chart high are SWV, who climb two places with this remix of their first single with some help from Michael Jackson.

2. Bitty Mclean – “It Keeps Raining”
It will have to rain just a little bit for Bitty Mclean this week as he stops in second place for a second week running, having made a challenge for the top spot.

1. Culture Beat – “Mr. Vain”
…which for a third week is taken by Culture Beat as they remain the biggest sellers of all. Can they make it a month at the top, or will SWV, Nirvana or someone else claim their very first chart topper? There’s only one way to find out…
