UK Top 40 Singles Chart for Sunday 19th September 1993
So this was the chart that Radio 1 DJ Bruno Brookes broadcast from 4pm-7pm with data from the GALLUP computer based on record sales from Monday 13th to Saturday 18th September 1993.
This is how the charts USED to look with new entries, climbers and non-movers, all based solely on record purchases. This week, thirty years ago, there were thirteen new entrys, six climbers and two non-movers! And it was announced like this…
40. Luther Vandross – “Heaven Knows” We start off this week with Luther Vandross falling six places with his new entry from last week and he’s not the only one to be going down.
39. Nirvana – “Heart Shaped Box” The new single from Nirvana crashes out of the top ten this week and drops a massive thirty places after three weeks in.
38. James – “Sometimes” Also with three weeks on the chart are James and they took are down, just thirteen for them with the lead single from their new album.
37. Terence Trent D’Arby – “She Kissed Me” Making it a fifth week is Terence Trent D’Arby with the third hit from his “Symphony Or Damn” album. He goes down eighteen places.
36. Paul Young – “Now I Know What Made Otis Blue” Our first new entry comes from Paul Young. He has a new album out next month, his first since “Other Voices” in 1990 and this is the lead single from it.
35. Lisa B – “Fascinated” Singer and model Lisa Barbuscia makes her top 40 debut this week, having been releasing singles since 1991, her fourth finally makes it.
34. Beverley Craven – “Love Scenes” Meanwhile, we welcome back to the chart Beverley Craven with something new and the first taste of her upcoming second studio album.
33. Moby – “Move” Moby made a move last week in the right direction but seven days on his latest goes down twelve places and away from the upper half of the chart.
32. Def Leppard – “Two Steps Behind” The new or unreleased tune from Def Leppard came onto the chart last week and they do enjoy a slightly better week two, as the song goes up three.
31. US3 – “Cantaloop” US3 are back with the follow up to “Riddim” and this time the London based group are on their own for this new entry.
29. Cranes – “Jewel” 29. Aftershock – “Slave To The Vibe” It’s not often record sales are identical but this week we have the situation where there are two joint holders of the No.29 position. The first comes from British band Cranes, who formed in 1985 but only score their first top 40 charting single today. The other is the former top twenty hit from Aftershock, which is down twelve places.
28. Jamiroquai – “When You Gonna Learn?” Jamiroquai are a new entry this week and this one does a bit better than their last, which failed to make the top thirty.
27. Motorhead – “Ace Of Spades” Not improving on its original chart position is the re-issue of Motorhead’s 1980 top twenty hit, which goes down four places.
26. Worlds Apart – “Everlasting Love” Back with another cover version are boys band Worlds Apart. This time they’ve tackled the Robert Knight song from 1967 which later became a big hit for Love Affair that same year.
25. Apache Indian – “Nuff Vibes” (EP) Boom Shak a lak! It’s Apache Indian and he’s out of the top twenty for the first time with this EP, which falls ten places.
24. UB40 – “Higher Ground” And it’s only lower ground from now on for UB40’s latest, which is also down ten. Their album “Promises And Lies” has now surpassed Platinum status.
23. Lenny Kravitz – “Heaven Help” Having made the move into the top twenty last week, Lenny Kravitz drops out and down three places with the latest offering from his “Are You Gonna Go My Way?” album.
22. Jade – “One Woman” One of last week’s new entry’s came from Jade, their third of this year on the UK top 40 and it goes up two places in week two.
21. Shara Nelson – “One Goodbye In Ten” Also going up in her second week is Shara Nelson with the second single to come from her debut solo album and she climbs five places.
20. Urban Cookie Collective – “The Key, The Secret” The Urban Cookie Collective stay top twenty for a tenth week with this big seller and they do so with a drop of seven places.
19. Stakka Bo – “Here We Go” Swedish artist Johan Renck calls himself Stakka Bo and he makes a big debut here in the UK this week with this single, which is his third and has already gone top five in his homeland.
18. Belinda Carlisle – “Big Scary Animal” Back with a big new entry is Belinda Carlisle, who has a new album, her first since 1991’s “Live Your Life Be Free”, on the way very soon.
17. Freddie Mercury – “Living On My Own” The former chart topping solo number one from Queen’s Freddie Mercury goes down six places, his ninth week on the chart and in the top twenty.
16. 2 Unlimited – “Faces” Ray and Anita of 2 Unlimited drop out of the top ten, having been non-movers for the past two weeks. They go down eight from number eight.
15. Mariah Carey – “Dreamlover” Mariah Carey was also a non-mover last week with the lead single from her new album, and is also out seven days on and down five.
14. Kate Bush – “Rubberband Girl” Falling two places is the new single from Kate Bush after it debuted this time last week, just as the first from her last album did back in 1989.
13. Radiohead – “Creep” Another of last week’s new entry’s going down in week two is the re-issue of Radiohead’s single from last year, having charted much higher that it did last time.
12. Roxette – “It Must Have Been Love” Going the other way are Roxette with the re-issue of their former top three hit from 1990 from the film ‘Pretty Woman’.
11. Billy Joel – “The River Of Dreams” Just slipping out of the top ten is Billy Joel with his biggest hit for a decade. Nine weeks on and the title track of his latest album is down five places.
10. The Wonder Stuff – “On The Ropes” (EP) The Wonder Stuff are back with new material and also back in the top ten with a big new entry, their first since their number one with Vic Reeves, “Dizzy”.
9. Depeche Mode – “Condemnation” (EP) More EP’s and more new entry’s as Depeche Mode return to the top ten with a collection of songs from their current album, “Songs Of Faith And Devotion”.
8. Haddaway – “Life” And there’s a new entry next for Haddaway, also back in the top ten following his big Summer hit, “What Is Love?”. Can he take this one even higher…?
7. Bitty McLean – “It Keeps Raining” The debut single from Bitty McLean goes down three this week and out of the top five. Bitty is better known to his family and friends as Delroy Easton McLean.
6. Chaka Demus and Pliers – “She Don’t Let Nobody” Chaka Demus and Pliers return to the top ten with the follow up to “Tease Me” and a climb of twelve places is the highest of all this week.
5. SWV – “Right Here” SWV landed right here last week and that’s as far as they are going for now as their biggest UK hit to date is a non-mover.
4. M People – “Moving On Up” The last M People single was their biggest yet and they better that with the follow up, which is this week’s highest new entry and their first top five hit!
3. Culture Beat – “Mr. Vain” We have change at the top as Culture Beat fall two places with their former three week chart topper. The duo also notch up two months on the UK top 40 with it.
2. Pet Shop Boys – “Go West” Last week’s highest new entry came from the Pet Shop Boys with their cover of the Village People song, but a week later and all they can manage is a non-mover.
1. DJ Jazzy Jeff and The Fresh Prince – “Boom Shake The Room” Meanwhile, last week’s highest climber from DJ Jazzy Jeff and The Fresh Prince, goes up two places to become the biggest seller of all and out new number one! But can they keep it, or will M People, the Pet Shop Boys, or someone else shake them off? There’s only one way to find out…
