UK Top 40 Singles Chart for Sunday 31st October 1993
So this was the chart that Radio 1 DJ Bruno Brookes broadcast from 4pm-7pm with data from the GALLUP computer based on record sales from Monday 25th to Saturday 30th October 1993.
This is how the charts USED to look with new entries, climbers and non-movers, all based solely on record purchases. This week, thirty years ago, there were thirteen new entrys, four climbers and two non-movers! And it was announced like this…
40. Right Said Fred – “Bumped” The new single from Right Said Fred gets a third week in the top 40, this time down seven on where it was seven days ago.
39. Texas – “You Owe It All To Me” Going nowhere are Texas with their new entry from last week, which holds the same position seven days on.
38. Freak Power – “Turn On, Tune In, Cop Out” Norman Cook’s Freak Power fall nine places with ‘their’ debut single after three weeks on the chart. Cop out indeed.
37. Gabrielle – “Going Nowhere” Gabrielle continues to go nowhere. Six weeks in with her second single and she’s down thirteen after five previous weeks of doing the same.
36. Kenny Thomas – “Piece By Piece” Kenny Thomas kicks off the new entry’s this week and he’s back with his third top 40 single this year from his latest album, “Wait For Me”.
35. Bitty Mclean – “Pass It On” While Bitty Mclean climbs two places with his second single in week two. His last and first reached the number two position.
34. Captain Hollywood Project – “More And More” Captain Hollywood was last seen with Twenty4Seven back in 1990 when they had two UK top ten hits. Now he’s on his own and gets a new entry with a song that was a big chart hit across Europe last year.
33. Lena Fiagbe – “Gotta Get It Right” Not getting it right at all this week is Lena Fiagbe with her debut single, which sinks thirteen places.
32. The Grid – “Texas Cowboys” While The Grid arrived for the first time last week with this number and drop eleven places a week later.
31. Lisa Stansfield – “So Natural” Having been a non-mover for the past two weeks, Lisa Stansfield‘s new single falls sixteen places. Her new album, of the same name, is out next week.
30. Chris Rea – “Julia” Going down twelve and out of the top twenty, is the first track from Chris Rea’s new album, which is out tomorrow!
29. The Cat – “Tongue Tied” Following Chris is Red Dwarf’s ‘Cat’, who also slips twelve places with his debut single as he attempts a landing.
28. Haddaway – “Life” Life for Haddaway this week is also out of the top twenty as his second hit of this year goes down fourteen places.
27. Future Sound Of London – “Cascade” Back to the new entry’s and the Future Sound Of London follow up “Papua New Guinea” from last year with this track.
26. Faith No More – “Another Body Murdered” Faith No More hit back with this new entry, which comes from the soundtrack of a new film called ‘Judgment Night’.
25. Juliet Roberts – “Free Love” And having achieved a top thirty hit recently with “Caught In The Middle”, Juliet Roberts is back with another new entry.
24. Soul II Soul – “Wish” The new ones keep coming and it’s Soul II Soul up next as Jazzi B delivers a new song from his upcoming greatest hits album that covers the last five years.
23. Wet Wet Wet – “Shed A Tear” Wet Wet Wet also have a greatest hits album on the horizon and this is the first new song from it which puts them back in the top 40 since early last year.
22. Chaka Demus and Pliers – “She Don’t Let Nobody” Down nine this week are Chaka Demus and Pliers after two months on the chart with the follow up to “Tease Me”.
21. Aerosmith – “Cryin'” There’s no cryin’ from Aerosmith this week as they are the highest climbers, up twelve places with the follow up to “Eat The Rich”.
20. Pauline Henry – “Feel Like Making Love” The Chimes singer Pauline Henry gets a big new entry next with a cover of the Bad Company song from 1974, which peaked in this very spot.
19. The Prodigy – “One Love” The latest from the The Prodigy, meanwhile, falls nine places and out of the top ten in their fourth week.
18. The Shamen – “Comin’ On” We welcome back The Shamen to the chart having had a superb 1992 with four top ten hits including THAT number one!
17. Tina Turner – “Why Must We Wait Until Tonight?” The new song from Tina Turner, written by Bryan Adams, drops down one place from where it entered this time last week.
16. Take That and Lulu – “Relight My Fire” Dropping down eight from number eight this week is the former number one from Take That and Lulu as they exit the top ten.
15. M People – “Moving On Up” Moving on down are M People with their biggest hit to date, down four this week as they elegantly slum it for a seventh week in the top twenty.
14. Whitney Houston – “Queen Of The Night” A year on and Whitney Houston is still releasing singles from ‘The Bodyguard’ film. This is the fifth and the fifth to make the UK top twenty.
13. Bjork and David Arnold – “Play Dead” Bjork’s biggest hit yet has been holding on to the spit it came in at for the last two weeks, but drops down one in week three.
12. The Levellers – “This Garden” Good news for The Levellers as their new single goes up ten places to put them back in the top twenty again.
11. The Time Frequency – “Real Love” Getting their biggest hit yet are the Time Frequency with a relaunch of a track from last year which failed to make the top 40 on its first outing.
10. Phil Collins – “Both Sides Of The Story” Phil Collins new album is called “Both Sides” and it’s out in two weeks time, but for now the title track falls three places having been a new entry last week.
9. Eternal – “Stay” Eternal have stayed in the top ten for five weeks with their debut single. The former backing singers for Dina Carroll are three places lower this week.
8. Mariah Carey – “Hero” back with a big new entry is Mariah Carey with the second single from her album “Music Box”. This now gives her four UK top ten hits to her name.
7. Culture Beat – “Got To Get It” Just above Mariah is this week’s highest new entry and it comes from former chart toppers Culture Beat out for a second number one this year…
6. DJ Jazzy Jeff and The Fresh Prince – “Boom Shake The Room” While it’s down just one place and out of the top five for a previous number one from DJ Jazzy Jeff and The Fresh Prince.
5. Goodmen – “Give It Up” The Goodmen and doing good with the re-issue of their single from just a few months ago. Last week’s highest climber goes up four more places.
4. Dina Carroll – “Don’t Be A Stranger” Dina Carroll requests you don’t be a stranger with her biggest hit single yet but she holds on to the same spot as she ascended to this time last week.
3. Cappella – “U Got 2 Let The Music” While Cappella‘s biggest and highest charting hit drops down one place from it’s peak on last week’s chart.
2. Bryan Adams – “Please Forgive Me” Will Cappella forgive Bryan Adams for taking their place as he moves up one with last week’s highest new entry? It’s his biggest hit here since his sixteen weeks chart topper in 1991!
1. Meat Loaf – “I’d Do Anything For Love…” …but he won’t be toppled off the top spot! Meat Loaf claims a third week as the biggest seller of all, but can he make it a fourth, or will Bryan bag another number one? There’s only one way to find out…
