UK Top 40 Singles Chart for 24th November 1985
So this was the chart that Radio 1 DJ Richard Skinner broadcast from 5pm-7pm with data from the GALLUP computer based on record sales.
This is how the charts USED to look with new entries, climbers and non-movers, all based solely on record purchases. This week there were ten new entrys, eleven climbers and one non-mover! And it was announced like this…
40. Pet Shop Boys – “West End Girls” We kick off with a top 40 debut from a British duo called the Pet Shop Boys. This song came out earlier in the year and has been remixed for this new release.
39. Amazulu – “Don’t You Just Know It” Amazulu got their first top 40 hit earlier this year and now follow it up with a second, which they will hope goes even further.
38. Madonna – “Gambler” Still down to one song, Madonna goes down sixteen places with her latest. The American singer is currently writing new material due for release next year.
37. Princess – “After The Love Has Gone” Princess bagged her debut hit with “Say I’m Your Number One” this Autumn and here comes number two and a new entry this week.
36. Paul Hardcastle – “Just For Money” Paul Hardcastle falls sixteen and out of the top twenty this week with his third release of the year after just four weeks.
35. Starship – “We Built This City” It’s been three years since American group Starship last landed in the UK top 40 but they are back with a brand new song, built of rock and roll!
34. Midge Ure – “That Certain Smile” Midge Ure will not be smiling this week as the follow up to his number one drops six places after just three weeks on the chart.
33. Nik Kershaw – “When A Heart Beats” While Nik Kershaw returns with this new entry which is something brand new and the first taster of a new album he is currently recording.
32. Bryan Adams and Tina Turner – “It’s Only Love” Star power does nothing for this song from Bryan Adams and Tina Turner, which goes down two places this week.
31. Marillion – “Heart Of Lothian” Rock kings Marillion come back for a third chart entry of 1985 as they will be hoping for a third top ten hit.
30. The Cult – “Revolution” The Cult have experienced selling sanctuary and rain this year and now here comes hit number three from them and a new entry.
29. Artists United Against Apartheid – “Sun City” The new entry’s keep coming and next up it’s producer Arthur baker and Steve Van Zandt who have roped some mates in to call themselves Artists United Against Apartheid to raise awareness.
28. The Waterboys – “The Whole Of The Moon” Trickling down this week are The Waterboys, having peaked, they fall to places with their first top 40 hit.
27. Simon May Orchestra – “Howards Way Theme” As does composer Simon May, who weighs anchor and returns to port, going down six with his theme from the new TV series.
26. Paul McCartney – “Spies Like us” Beatle Paul McCartney gets a new entry and it’s with the title song of a new film that’s coming out starring Chevy Chase and Dan Ackroyd.
25. Prefab Sprout – “When Love Breaks Down” Prefab Sprout enjoy a great second week in the top 40 with their very first charting hit, which shoots up fifteen places, and is one of this week’s two joint highest climbers!
24. Go West – “Don’t Look Down” Just above them are is this week’s highest new entry from Go West as they get a fourth top 40 hit for this year and potentially a second top ten hit…
23. King – “The Taste Of Your Tears” We have a Princess and a King on the chart this week and later there will be Queen, but for now King fall eight places and out of the top twenty.
22. David Grant and Jaki Graham – “Mated” David Grant and Jaki Graham are heading for another big hit together as their second duet of the year climbs fourteen places.
21. Madness – “Uncle Sam” Six weeks on and Madness are still going up with this one. They anchor up three places to sit just outside the top twenty.
20. Colonel Abrams – “Trapped” Falling seven this week is Colonel Abrams with his former top three smash hit, now with four months on the chart!
19. Lloyd Cole and The Commotions -“Lost Weekend” Lloyd Cole and The Commotions enjoyed a second top twenty hit last week with their latest, but seven days on it goes down two places.
18. Dire Straits – “Brothers In Arms” That also went for Dire Straits with this one, their fourth of this year, but a week on it too is down two places.
17. The Far Corporation – “Stairway To Heaven” Falling down their stairway to heaven are The Far Corporation with this cover of the Led Zeppelin song, which is down six places.
16. Dionne Warwick and Friends – “That’s What Friends Are For” Dionne Warwick’s friends are there for her and for all the new AIDS Foundation and this song is helping to raise money for it and with a climb of three, it will be able to give much more.
15. Elton John – “Nikita” Elton John is one of Dionne’s friends on her song and here he is on his own, down nine places with his highest charting single of this decade so far.
14. Eurythmics and Aretha Franklin – “Sisters Are Doing It For Themselves” Not doing it for themselves any more are the Eurythmics and Aretha Franklin as they exit the top ten, down five places.
13. Level 42 – “Something About You” As are Level 42, who fall five with their biggest chart hit for two years and they have a new one about to come out.
12. a-ha – “Take On Me” The boys from Norway, a-ha leave what will be a refreshed top ten this week as they go down seven after ten weeks on the chart.
11. Lionel Richie – “Say You, Say Me” Last week’s highest climber from Lionel Richie makes further upwardly moves as he is three places higher than he was.
10. Phil Collins and Marilyn Martin – “Separate Lives” The duet between Phil Collins and Marilyn Martin is this week’s other joint highest climber of fifteen places as they bolt into the top ten.
9. Whitney Houston – “Saving All My Love For You” Chart newcomer Whitney Houston is actually Dionne Warwick’s cousin! She overtakes her better known chart relative with her very first UK hit, which goes up fourteen places.
8. Queen – “One Vision” Queen, on the other hand, go down one with their brand new recording. The band having been a big draw at this year’s Live Aid.
7. Doug E. Fresh and The Get Fresh Crew – “The Show” Doug E. Fresh and The Get Fresh Crew bring their show to the UK top ten this week as they go up five places.
6. Talking Heads – “Road To Nowhere” While Talking Heads continue to advance along the road to the top of the chart as they go up four places.
5. Jennifer Rush – “The Power Of Love” The former number one from Jennifer Rush is down just one place, remaining in the top five for an eighth week.
4. Dee C. Lee – “See The Day” Former Style Council backing singer Dee C. Lee is really going big with her first solo single which powers into the top five, up fourteen places.
3. UB40 – “Don’t Break My Heart” While UB40 fail to make it to number one this week as they become a non-mover in third place with the follow up to their Sonny and Cher cover.
2. Feargal Sharkey – “A Good Heart” And after two weeks on top, Feargal Sharkey moves down one to make way for a new number one, his good heart no longer good enough.
1. Wham – “I’m Your Man” It’s last week’s highest new entry from Wham that goes up one to become this week’s biggest seller and brand new number one! The song is Andrew and George’s third chart topper now together. But can they keep it for another week, or will Dee C Lee, Talking Heads or someone else push them aside? There’s only one way to find out…
