UK Top 40 Singles Chart for 1st December 1985
So this was the chart that Radio 1 DJ Richard Skinner broadcast from 5pm-7pm with data from the GALLUP computer based on record sales.
This is how the charts USED to look with new entries, climbers and non-movers, all based solely on record purchases. This week there were three new entrys, two re-entry’s, fifteen climbers and five non-movers! And it was announced like this…
40. The Waterboys – “The Whole Of The Moon” The Waterboys get another week in the top 40 with their very first hit single, which is down twelve places.
39. Bronski Beat – “Hit That Perfect Beat” We’ve seen Jimmy Somerville with his new project in the chart recently, now here’s his old group, Bronski Beat, with a new entry.
38. Shakin’ Stevens – “Merry Christmas Everyone” Shakin’ Stevens is back having got that lipstick, powder and paint off his shirt and this time he’s gone all festive for this new entry.
37. Simon May Orchestra – “Howards Way Theme” Howards Way has proven a hit in the TV ratings and so has the theme music from Simon May and his Orchestra, who are down ten this week.
36. Colonel Abrams – “Trapped” As has this song from Colonel Abrams which has been around for what seems like forever. He’s down sixteen this week.
35. Cameo – “She’s Strange” Cameo are back with this new entry, and back with this song, which made No.37 over a years ago, and it comes back higher up!
34. Lloyd Cole and The Commotions – “Lost Weekend” Lloyd Cole and The Commotions have lost the top twenty this week as the fall fifteen places with their second to peak there this year.
33. Amazulu – “Don’t You Just Know It” Amazulu go up six in their second week with their second single to make the top 40. The group will release their debut album early next year.
32. The Far Corporation – “Stairway To Heaven” The Far Corporation’s cover of this old Led Zeppelin song has been on the chart for seven weeks now as they fall fifteen places.
31. Princess – “After The Love Has Gone” Going up six is the new single from Princess, who is recording her debut album with Stock Aitken Waterman as we speak!
30. The Cult – “Revolution” The Cult are doing anything but creating a revolution with their latest, which was a new entry last week and stays exactly still for a second.
29. Marillion – “Heart Of Lothian” Marillion do with their new entry from last week as the leap over and up two places and into the top thirty.
28. Dire Straits – “Brothers In Arms” “Brothers In Arms” is by far and a way the biggest selling album of this years from Dire Straits as the title track falls ten places on the singles chart.
27. Nik Kershaw – “When A Heart Beats” The brand new single from Nik Kershaw enjoys a climb of six places in its second week on the chart as he prepares to follow up his hugely successful album “The Riddle”.
26. Madness – “Uncle Sam” After five weeks of steady progress, Madness miss out on a top twenty entry this time and go back five places.
25. Prefab Sprout – “When Love Breaks Down” Prefab Sprout were one of last week’s joint highest climbers but a week on and they can do nothing but stay in the same position.
24. Band Aid – “Do They Know It’s Christmas?” We have another re-entry this week and it’s last year’s Christmas number one from Band Aid! Will it do the double and be there again in three weeks time…?
23. Pet Shop Boys – “West End Girls” Chart newcomers the Pet Shop Boys made it to the top 40 last week with this, their debut single, which goes up seventeen places and that makes it the highest of all this week!
22. Level 42 – “Something About You” Three months on and Level 42 are still doing business with this single, which only just leaves the top twenty, down nine places.
21. Artists United Against Apartheid – “Sun City” The musical group known as Artists United Against Apartheid have a better week upon entry to the UK top 40 last week as they go up eight places.
20. David Grant and Jaki Graham – “Mated” David Grant and Jaki Graham are back in the top twenty together for a second time this year as they creep in up just two places.
19. Starship – “We Built This City” American group Starship have been going in some form since 1964 and this week they make their UK top twenty debut as their latest shoots up sixteen places.
18. Eurythmics and Aretha Franklin – “Sisters Are Doing It For Themselves” The sisters and the singer – Eurythmics and Aretha Franklin – are doing it four places lower this week.
17. Paul McCartney – “Spies Like Us” Paul McCartney returned to the chart with something new last week, it comes from the film of the same name, and it goes up nine places in week two.
16. Dionne Warwick and Friends – “That’s What Friends Are For” Dionne Warwick and Friends have to make do with another week in the same spot as they are all non-movers.
15. Queen – “One Vision” Queen exit the top ten with their first new track together since “Thank God It’s Christmas” last year. They are down seven places.
14. a-ha – “Take On Me” Having taken a big drop out of the top ten last week, Norway’s a-ha descend just wo places this week, now with ten weeks in the UK top 40.
13. Go West – “Don’t Look Down” Last week’s highest new entry came from the Go West boys and with a climb of eleven, they return to the top twenty for the third time this year.
12. Madonna – “Dress You Up” Madonna is back this week and it wouldn’t been the same without her having at least one single in the top 40. This is also this week’s highest new entry!
11. Elton John – “Nikita” Good news for Elton John as he left the top ten last week but goes back up the chart with a rebound of four places!
10. Jennifer Rush – “The Power Of Love” The former number one from Jennifer Rush is down five places from number five this week. The song has been around now for four months!
9. Lionel Richie – “Say You, Say Me” Lionel Richie returns to the UK top ten as his brand new single goes up two places. It’s his first since “Hello” last year.
8. Talking Heads – “Road To Nowhere” The road to nowhere ends here for Talking Heads as they drop down two places with their best seller so far.
7. Doug E Fresh and The Get Fresh Crew – “The Show” While the show pauses for a time in the same spot for Doug E Fresh and The Gret Fresh Crew as they are non-movers.
6. UB40 – “Don’t Break My Heart” UB40 come to the end of their road as they drop down three places from number three, where they’ve been for the last two weeks.
5. Phil Collins and Marilyn Martin – “Separate Lives” Last week’s other highest climber came form Phil Collins and Marilyn Martin and they move into the top five, up five places.
4. Feargal Sharkey – “A Good Heart” While falling two places is the former number one from Feargal Sharkey. This track comes from his self-titled debut album, which is out now.
3. Dee C Lee – “See The Day” I wonder if Dee C Lee ever saw the day when she would be top three with a single of her own? Well, she is and she goes up one place!
2. Whitney Houston – “Saving All My Love For You” Going up seven is American singer Whitney Houston with her first UK chart hit single, which has been written by Michael Masser and Gerry Goffin.
1. Wham – “I’m Your Man” So for a second week, Andrew and George are top boys as they remain the number one best seller. But can they go a third, or will Whitney, Dee C Lee or Phil and Marilyn see the day…? There’s only one way to find out…
