UK Top 40 Singles Chart for 8th December 1985
So this was the chart that Radio 1 DJ Richard Skinner broadcast from 5pm-7pm with data from the GALLUP computer based on record sales.
This is how the charts USED to look with new entries, climbers and non-movers, all based solely on record purchases. This week there were seven new entrys, one re-entry, twelve climbers and four non-movers! And it was announced like this…
40. The Concept – “Mr. DJ” We kick of with a debut single from producer ‘The Concept’ that makes its first steps in the UK top 40 this week.
39. Sophia George – “Girlie Girlie” That also goes for Jamaican singer Sophia George as she too makes her UK top 40 debut entry with this song, which is also her debut single.
38. Dire Straits – “Brothers In Arms” Dire Straits released their debut single back in 1978, so this is not their first. Eight weeks on and this release is down ten places.
37. Aled Jones – “Walking In The Air” We are gearing up for Christmas as choir boy Aled Jones offers his interpretation of the title song from the animated film ‘The Snowman’.
36. Level 42 – “Something About You” Level 42 have a lot to live up to with their next single. This one has been around for over three months now and it’s still top 40, but down fourteen places.
35. Level 42 – “Leaving Me Now” …and here it comes! The ’42’ are back with a new entry on top of their previous single, but how long will it last and how high will it go…?
34. Elton John – “Wrap Her Up” Elton John is also keen for another hit following on from “Nikita”, which is still about somewhere. This is the follow up and the first of his two singles this week.
33. Iron Maiden – “Run To The Hills” Iron Maiden are back with another live track as a single. This one was first released in 1982 and made No.7 back then.
32. Wham – “Last Christmas” Last Christmas, Wham were held off the top spot with this one, so can they make it to the top this year? They have a re-entry and a return this week.
31. Princess – “After The Love Has Gone” Princess won’t know what happens after the love has gone as her latest is stuck as a non-mover for another week.
30. Nik Kershaw – “When A Heart Beats” Not doing so well himself is Nik Kershaw with his brand new single falling three places, his lowest charting this year.
29. Eurythmics and Aretha Franklin – “Sisters Are Doing It For Themselves” The Eurythmics and Aretha Franklin drop eleven this week as they leave the top twenty with their sisterly collaboration.
28. Prefab Sprout – “When Love Breaks Down” Having been non-movers for the last two weeks, top 40 newcomers Prefab Sprout go down three places with their first hit.
27. Jennifer Rush – “The Power Of Love” Taking a big hit is the former chart topper from Jennifer Rush as she slides seventeen places after spending so long on the chart to date.
26. Bronski Beat – “Hit That Perfect Beat” Hitting that perfect beat indeed are Bronski Beat as their new one climbs thirteen places in its second week.
25. Queen – “One Vision” There is a Princess and a Queen on the chart this week, The Queen are a band and they are down ten places.
24. Cameo – “She’s Strange” Cameo’s re-issued single made it to the chart last week and goes up eleven a week on, making it more successful than it was first time around.
23. a-ha – “Take On Me” a-ha leave the UK top twenty with their very first hit single as they fall nine places having been around for three months now.
22. Artists United Against Apartheid – “Sun City” The collection of artists known as Artists United Against Apartheid parked themselves outside the top twenty last week, but that’s as far as they go with the single slipping back one place.
21. Dionne Warwick and Friends – “That’s What Friends Are For” Dionne Warwick and her Friends just drop out of the upper half of the chart as they all go down five places, having been non-movers for the past two weeks.
20. David Grant and Jaki Graham – “Mated” David Grant and Jaki Graham arrived in the top twenty last week, but that’s where they remain in the same position for another.
19. Amazulu – “Don’t You Just Know It” Good news for Amazulu, they too register a second top twenty hit this year and make their return going up fourteen places.
18. Elton John – “Nikita” Elton is one of a number of artists with more than one single in the top 40 this week, this is his second and it’s down seven places.
17. Bruce Springsteen – “Santa Claus Is Coming To Town” Getting in the festive mood this year is Bruce Springsteen with a seasonal sound from his “Born In The U.S.A.” album, which is this week’s highest new entry!
16. Paul McCartney – “Spies Like Us” Climbing just one this week is Paul McCartney with the title track from the comedy film which is directed by John Landis.
15. Talking Heads – “Road To Nowhere” Taking the road to nowhere out of the top ten are Talking Heads as they go down seven places with this one.
14. Starship – “We Built This City” While Starship built their city higher and also go higher in the UK top 40, up five in fact, with one of last week’s joint highest climbers.
13. Go West – “Don’t Look Down” Not looking anywhere are Go West as their latest stalls this week as a non-mover, the duo’s third top twenty hit of this year.
12. UB40 – “Don’t Break My Heart” UB40 leave the top ten, down six places, with the latest to come from this year’s Gold certified “Baggariddim” album.
11. Doug E Fresh and The Get Fresh Crew – “The Show” Putting on a show outside the top ten this week are Doug E Fresh and The Get Fresh Crew as they fall four places.
10. Shakin Stevens – “Merry Christmas Everyone” Shaky’s new seasonal offering storms into the top ten this week with the highest climber up a massive twenty eight places!
9. Pet Shop Boys – “West End Girls” Making their debut in the top ten are the Pet Shop Boys. Their highest climber of last week goes up fourteen more a week later.
8. Lionel Richie – “Say You, Say Me” Taking a slower pace is Lionel Richie as he goes up one with his new song, the first to come from his next album.
7. Feargal Sharkey – “A Good Heart” The former number one from Feargal Sharkey falls three this week and out of the top five. Feargal has been around now for ten weeks.
6. Band Aid – “Do They Know It’s Christmas?” Motoring towards the top once more are all the stars that make up Band Aid. Their re-entry from last week goes up eighteen places.
5. Madonna – “Dress You Up” Back in the top five once more this year is Madonna with her highest new entry from last week, which goes up seven places, seven days later.
4. Phil Collins and Marilyn Martin – “Separate Lives” They may live separate lives, but Phil Collins and Marilyn Martin stick together for this duet, which is up one more place.
3. Dee C Lee – “See The Day” Seeing another day at number three is Dee C Lee as she gets a non-mover with her debut single for a second week.
2. Wham – “I’m Your Man” While the number one from Wham that’s been at the top for the last two weeks drops down one to make way for someone else…
1. Whitney Houston – “Saving All My Love For You” …that someone is Whitney Houston, who goes up one to score her very first UK number one with her very first UK top 40 charting single! But can she keep it, or will Phil and Marilyn, Madonna or Band Aid put a stop to that? There’s only one way to find out…
