REVIEW: ‘Extension’ – Kylie Minogue

Kylie Minogue – “Extension”

From the lady that brought you “Disco Extended Mixes” in 2021 comes “Extension”, which does the exactly same thing, it’s a longer version of her most recent album, “Tension“, with a clever title! The album does justice to some of the short tracks on the original album, adding at least another minute of music to each, making for a much more wholesome album than the one served up in September 2023, which topped the UK and Australian album chart and charted at No.21 in America, becoming her most successful album since 2010’s “Aphrodite“.

“Extension” begins with the already released “Padam Padam“, one of the tracks better off from being extended and not such a brief interlude as the global smash hit that dominated this Summer was. At over four minutes in length, it was surprising that “Hold On To Now” really needed more, but another minute of music and choral voices at the end just adds to the majesty of this track, which deserves much more promotion as a single and a proper video(!) The Weeknd influenced “Things We Do For Love” just sounds even more electric in extended form with more 80’s vibes and synths taking you right back to the Summer of 1986, even before Kylie began her own music career!

Tension“, extension is another retro track with that mid-90’s hook that just improves with every listen and with another minute of Kylie repeating “touch me right there…touch me right there…” cannot be ignored. Oh my God! “One More Time” may sound like a holdover from the “Disco” album, but it just goes to show the girl has not fully exorcised that disco ball from her mind and with a little more to it, “One More Time”, yes “One more time, One more time…”, is sounding even more like “I Love It” part two every second. Rewind it back! The real killer tune of this album is “You Still Get Me High”, and here we get more of an uptempo build up to the first verse, giving the game away that this is no ballad, instead a wicked, outstanding anthem that ranks with the greatest Kylie songs ever.

Like “Padam”, “Hands” suffers on the short side at 2:45 on the original album, here it weighs in at over four minutes and heralds the 70’s funk section of the album, which continues with the lithesome “Green Light”, so prepare for more sax, I said SAX! Yes the Earth Wind and Fire/Shalamar tribute tune just brims and oozes sensuality and sass, again another can’t-miss track on this collection. As Kylie is crowned Queen of Vegas, so “Vegas High”, her nod to the town where she takes up residency, races in with a greater pace but without the urgency of the original, and with over five minutes to this one, just sit back and absorb. “10 Out Of 10” earns an 11 out of 10 to Oliver Heldens’ ‘extension’ to his 2:51 original. It seems so long since this one was first heard, but don’t forget it.

“Story” concludes this revisit to Kylie’s sixteenth studio album and I have to say, I for one am more impressed with this pumping, endless bumping track than I was for it first time around. A worthy ending to this latest chapter in Miss Minogue’s musical journey, and yet again, a far superior beast than the original album we were first dished up. Play this and nothing else…ONE MORE TIME!
