It’s thirty years since Sannie Carlson aka Whigfield took her debut single into the charts across mainland Europe and she recently gave a live performance of the song in Italy, where it was first released in 1992. It wasn’t until 1993 that the track saw wider appeal and went to No.1 in Spain.
1994 was truly the year of “Saturday Night”, the Summer clubs and holiday islands were buzzing with it and at the beginning of September that year it saw commercial release in the UK, where to debuted at No.1 famously ending the fifteen week reign at the top of Wet Wet Wet’s “Love Is All Around”, selling over a million copies there.
The song continued it’s domination into 1995 as it hit The States, eventually topping the charts in more than a dozen countries and going top ten in over thirty worldwide. Songwriters Davide Riva and Alfredo Pignagnoli may have been the brains behind the Whigfield project, but it was Sannie who fronted it and who is still regarded as Whigfield herself. Take it away…
