COVER vs ORIGINAL: ‘Let It Snow, Let It Snow, Let It Snow’

The song, “Let It Snow, Let It Snow, Let It Snow”, was originally recorded by Vaughn Monroe in 1945

Christmas Classic “Let It Snow, Let It Snow, Let It Snow”, or sometimes just “Let It Snow”, was written by Jule Styne (1905-1994) and Sammy Cahn (1913-1993) in 1945, ironically during a heatwave! It was first recorded by American singer Vaughn Monroe (1911-1973) that Christmas and it went to No.1 throughout the holiday season.

The following year, fellow American Woody Herman (1913-1987) recorded his version and took it to No.8 on the singles chart, but while it has been recorded by many artists ever since, some of the best known and best loved have come from, firstly, Frank Sinatra in 1950. His version has become a standard and sold many millions of copies the world over.

His fellow Rat Pack pal Dean Martin (1917-1995) recorded a version in 1959 for his “A Winter Romance” album and one again, his has become a festive favourite, selling over five million copies to date and making the top twenty in over twenty countries around the world, actually out performing Frank outside of the American charts.

Other artists include Bing Crosby in 1962, Jessica Simpson in 2004, Carly Simon in 2005, Kylie Minogue in 2010 and Rod Stewart in 2012. Originally a B side, Kylie’s version also turned up on her 2015 album, “Kylie Christmas“, while both Rod and Kylie came together in 2012 to perform the song at an exclusive show in Scotland to promote his album, “Merry Christmas, Baby”.
