The song, “Somewhere Only We Know”, was originally recorded by Keane in 2003
Tim Rice-Oxley, Tom Chaplin and Richard Hughes of the band Keane wrote the song “Somewhere Only We Know” for their debut album “Hopes and Fears” in 2003. The track was released as the third single in February 2004 and peaked at No.3 in the UK and made No.50 in America. It holds a Platinum certification in both territories and remains the groups most successful single to date.
Ten years later, Lily Allen covered the song for the John Lewis Christmas ad campaign and it was released commercially that November in support. Her version topped the UK singles chart, where it has sold over 1.2 million copies, her third single to top the chart in her home country. Lily’s “Somewhere Only We Know” would also become a top ten success around Europe. It would later appear on her 2014 studio album, “Sheezus”.
But which version is the best? KEANE’s original or LILY’s cover?
