UK Top 40 Singles Chart for 8th January 1984

So this was the chart that Radio 1 DJ Simon Bates broadcast from 5pm-7pm with data from the GALLUP computer based on record sales.

This is how the charts USED to look with new entries, climbers and non-movers, all based solely on record purchases.
This week, forty years ago, there were eight new entrys, twelve climbers and NO non-movers! And it was announced like this…

40. Whitesnake – “Give Me More Time”
British band Whitesnake kick off the with the first new release of 1984, which is the second single to come from their new album, which is due out at the end of the month.

39. Eartha Kitt – “Where Is My Man?”
Also new is this one from American singer and actress Eartha Kitt, who comes back to the UK top 40 after an absence of thirty years!

38. Gloria Gaynor – “I Am What I Am”
Gloria Gaynor is another American singer making her return to the UK chart with a song that comes from the stage production of La Cage Aux Folles.

37. Genesis – “That’s All”
Could that be all for Genesis for now as their latest goes down ten places in its tenth week on the top 40…?

36. China Crisis – “Wishful Thinking”
China Crisis come back in 1984 with a new entry, which is only their second to do so since “Christian” twelve months ago.

35. Culture Club – “Karma Chameleon”
The former number one from Culture Club stays chartwise for an 18th week as it once again departs the top thirty, down five places.

34. Barry Manilow – “Read Em And Weep”
With just six weeks, Barry Manilow is down eleven places with his latest offering, which shadows in comparison.

33. Paul McCartney and Michael Jackson – “Say Say Say”
The pairing of Paul McCartney and Michael Jackson produces this fourteen weeker and they are down four places.

32. The Police – “King Of Pain”
There’s something new from The Police for 1984 as they make a return following their huge number one “Every Breath You Take”.

31. Marilyn – “Calling Your Name”
Marilyn calls anyones name outside the top thirty this week as she falls seven with her debut single after ten weeks.

30. Elvis Presley – “I Can Help”
Elvis can help and we help him to go top thirty this week with a climb of three places with his highest charting single since 1982.

29. Shakin’ Stevens – “Cry Just A Little Bit”
Shakin’ Stevens is down seven this week with his former top three single, which has been around for ten weeks.

28. The Icicle Works – “Love Is A Wonderful Colour”
There’s a top 40 debut next from a British band called The Icicle Works, and it really is third time lucky for them as this is their third single.

27. Wham – “Club Fantastic Megamix”
Wham drop two places this week with their megamix of tunes after superb success in 1983. Let’s hope they can offer more in 84!

26. Cliff Richard – “Please Don’t Fall In Love”
Cliff Richard is down thirteen this week with this one, which has been around for two months and leaves the top twenty.

25. The Pretenders – “2000 Miles”
The Pretenders Christmas song is also down and out as they fall nine, also with two months on the chart.

24. Tears For Fears – “The Way You Are”
Tears For Fears continue their slow climb of the top 40. This week finds them four up on where they were.

23. Rod Stewart – “Sweet Surrender”
Also continuing to make steps in the right direction is Rod Stewart as he moves nine places higher than he was.

22. Lionel Richie – “Running With The Night”
Lionel Richie is running quickly with his latest, which is up fourteen places after his new entry last week.

21. Tracey Ullman – “Move Over Darling”
Just dropping out of the upper half of the chart is Tracey Ullman as she falls six places with her cover of the Doris Day song.

20. UB40 – “Many Rivers To Cross”
UB40 remain top twenty into 1984 this week but down three places with their last single release of 1983.

19. Snowy White – “Bird Of Paradise”
There are some big movers in the upper half of the top 40 and one of them is Snowy White. Week two sees him up twenty one places, but he’s not the highest.

18. Joe Fagin – “That’s Livin’ Alright”
British singer Joe Fagin makes a grand entrance as he debuts in the top twenty with the theme song from the TV series Auf Wiedersehen Pet.

17. Tina Turner – “Let’s Stay Together”
Staying in the UK top twenty is Tina Turner as her version of this song goes down five places this week.

16. Billy Joel – “Uptown Girl”
The former number one from Billy Joel racks up another week in the top twenty as he falls only two places.

15. Kool and The Gang – “Straight Ahead”
Going straight ahead and up the chart are Kool and The Gang, who are four places up on last weeks position.

14. Roland Rat Superstar – “Rat Rapping”
And so is superstar Roland Rat Superstar as he also moves up four places with his ‘brilliant’ debut single.

13. Shakin’ Stevens and Bonnie Tyler – “A Rockin’ Good Way”
Here comes Shaky again and he’s bagging this week’s highest new entry along with Bonnie Tyler with a cover of a song recorded by Dinah Washington and Brook Benton in 1960.

12. Michael Jackson – “Thriller”
And here is Michael Jackson again, this time on his own and with the title track of his current album, which is down one place.

11. Slade – “My Oh My”
Reduced to one song, Slade take a big plunge this week, down nine from the number two spot to leave the top ten altogether!

10. The Flying Pickets – “Only You”
And it doesn’t stop there as we have a new number one, and I can say that as the song that was on top from The Flying Pickets also slides nine places to the bottom of the top ten!

9. The Thompson Twins – “Hold Me Now”
Going down just one on where they were last week are The Thompson Twins with one of the biggest hits of last year.

8. Kenny Rogers and Dolly Parton – “Islands In The Stream”
Also down one but clocking up ten weeks on the UK chart are Kenny Rogers and Dolly Parton with their duet.

7. Culture Club – “Victims”
Falling three are Culture Club with the latest of their two singles in the top 40, having been top three previously.

6. Frankie Goes To Hollywood – “Relax”
New group Frankie Goes To Hollywood made the chart this time last week and they are really going for it in 1984. A massive leap of twenty nine places makes them this week’s highest!

5. Paul Young – “Love Of The Common People”
The top five starts with Paul Young down two with his latest and one of a number of singles in the top ten with nine weeks on the chart.

4. Billy Joel – “Tell Her About It”
He makes way for Billy Joel’s follow up to “Uptown Girl”, which goes up two and it could be another number one for him…

3. Status Quo – “Marguerita Time”
We could also have a number one from Status Quo, as they also go up two places celebrating Marguerita time”.

2. Howard Jones – “What Is Love?”
But it will most likely come from Howard Jones, who has a fantastic week as he goes up eight places in his eighth week on the chart.

1. Paul McCartney – “Pipes Of Peace”
For this week, we do have a new number one and it’s last week’s highest climber from Paul McCartney that also goes up eight to claim the top spot. Can he go a second, or will Howard Jones, Status Quo, Billy Joel or someone else take it from him? There’s only one way to find out…
