UK Top 40 Singles Chart for Sunday 9th January 1994

So this was the chart that Radio 1 DJ Bruno Brookes broadcast from 4pm-7pm with data from the GALLUP computer based on record sales from Monday 3rd to Saturday 8th January 1994.

This is how the charts USED to look with new entries, climbers and non-movers, all based solely on record purchases.
This week, thirty years ago, there were fourteen new entrys, nine climbers and two non-movers! And it was announced like this…

40. Tasmin Archer – “Shipbuilding” (EP)
Tasmin Archer returns to the top 40 for 1994 with an EP of songs headlined by the title track that was written in 1982 by Elvis Costello.

39. Lisa B – “You And Me”
Also making her return to the top 40 is Lisa B with this new entry and her second single to make it this far.

38. Frankie Goes To Hollywood – “The Power Of Love”
Sliding eighteen places are Frankie Goes To Hollywood with the re-issue of their 1984 chart topper now in 1994.

37. Daryl Hall – “Stop Loving Me, Stop Loving You”
It’s been some time since Daryl Hall made the UK top 40, in fact it was back in 1986 with “Dreamtime”, but he’s back for the 1990’s with something new!

36. Alison Limerick – “Time Of Our Lives”
Which is what Alison Limerick did last week and she goes up two places in week two with her first chart showing since “Make It On My Own” in 1992.

35. The Mission – “Tower Of Strength”
Going down two in week two are The Mission with this re-issue of their top twenty hit from 1988. The group will release a greatest hits album next month.

34. Tag Team – “Whoomp (There It Is)”
Going up five places are Cecil Glenn and Steve Gibson – Tag Team – with their debut single, which debuted this time last week.

33. Janet Jackson – “Again”
Last week’s highest climber from Janet Jackson takes a massive slump of twenty one places a week on, having been on the UK top 40 for nine weeks.

32. Cyndi Lauper – “Who Let In The Rain?”
Back for a second go with a single from her brand new album is Cyndi Lauper. This is the follow up to “That’s What I Think”.

31. Peal Jam – “Daughter”
Dropping twelve places are Peal Jam with their former highest new entry, now in its third week on the UK top 40.

30. One Dove – “Why Don’t You Take Me?”
Scottish band One Dove return to the chart for 1994 with the follow up to their October debut with “Breakdown”.

29. Terrorvision – “My House”
Meanwhile, British band Terrorvision climb five places and into the top thirty with their very first chart hit.

28. Phil Collins – “Everyday”
Back for 1994 is Phil Collins with the second single from his brand new album, which follows the lead single, “Both Sides Of The Story”.

27. M People – “Don’t Look Any Further”
Having spent the last six weeks in the upper half of the chart, M People depart and go down ten places with their version of the Dennis Edwards/Siedah Garrett song.

26. Toni Braxton – “Breathe Again”
We welcome American singer Toni Braxton to the UK top 40 this week, having tried before with this single, which went to No.3 in America upon release in October last year.

25. Bryan Adams – “Please Forgive Me”
It’s time to move for Bryan Adams and after three weeks at No.11, he falls fourteen places with this song, that’s now been around for three months.

24. EYC – “Feelin’ Alright”
Sadly, the EYC boys are also down with their debut single, falling eight places and not feeling alright any longer.

23. Mariah Carey – “Hero”
Also leaving the top twenty is Mariah Carey with the second single from her album “Music Box”, which clocks up eleven weeks on the chart.

22. Def Leppard – “Action”
Sheffield rockers Def Leppard are back for 1994 with new material and this is the first new single from them since 1992.

21. Bitty McLean – “Here I Stand”
Also back for 1994 is the young man with one of the biggest sellers from last year, Bitty McLean. This is his third single and third to make the top 40.

20. Wet Wet Wet – “Cold Cold Heart”
Wet Wet Wet go up three this week and in doing so, it gives the band their first top twenty hit for some two years.

19. Meat Loaf – “Bat Out Of Hell”
Meat Loaf departs the top ten and falls ten places with the re-issue of the title track of his debut album.

18. Shabba Ranks and Patra – “Family Affair”
Shabba Ranks and Patra can do no more for now as their cover of this track stays put for a second week in the same spot.

17. The The – “Dis-Infected” (EP)
The The return to the chart with a big new entry, which is their first top twenty showing since “The Beat(en) Generation” in 1989.

16. Ce Ce Peniston – “I’m In The Mood”
Also back after nearly two years away is American artist Ce Ce Peniston with a brand new track that will feature on her upcoming second album.

15. DJ Duke – “Blow Your Whistle”
Blowing his whistle loud is DJ Duke as his blows into the UK top twenty with his debut single which goes up seven places.

14. Peabo Bryson and Regina Belle – “A Whole New World”
Falling one place again this week are Peabo Bryson and Regina Belle with their duet from the Disney film ‘Aladdin’.

13. Meat Loaf – “I’d Do Anything For Love…”
Meat Loaf’s other single, his former seven week chart topper, is also out of the top ten as it falls five places.

12. Eternal – “Save Our Love”
We welcome back the Eternal girls to 1994 with the follow up to their top five debut “Stay”. Let’s see what they can do with this one…

11. Haddaway – “I Miss You”
Five weeks on and Haddaway is still climbing with this one and he’s near to the top ten now as he goes up four places.

10. Take That – “Babe”
Take That‘s time at number two comes to an end as their former one week number one and three week number two drops eight places.

9. Mr. Blobby – “Mr. Blobby”
While going down six is the song that kept them from being Christmas number one from Mr. Blobby as he exits the top five.

8. Bee Gees – “For Whom The Bell Tolls”
With two months on the chart now, the Bee Gees are down two places with their former top five hit single.

7. Bryan Adams, Rod Stewart and Sting – “All For Love”
Here somes Bryan Adams again and he’s brought along Rod Stewart and Sting with him for this triple headed song that comes from the soundtrack of a new version of ‘The Three Musketeers’.

6. Dina Carroll – “The Perfect Year”
Last week, Dina Carroll went up one to number five in her fifth week, and a week later she drops down one to number six in her sixth week. Has the perfect year come to an end?

5. Culture Beat – “Anything”
She makes way for the highest new entry, which comes from Culture Beat and in doing so it gives them three out of three UK top five charting singles!

4. K7 – “Come Baby Come”
K7 goes up three this week which takes him into the UK top five with his debut single, six weeks after arrival.

3. East 17 – “It’s Alright”
Also going up still after seven weeks on the chart are East 17 as they go up one more to take them into the top three for the very first time.

2. D:Ream – “Things Can Only Get Better”
Last week’s highest new entry from D:Ream becomes this week’s highest climber of eight places as things really do get better for them!

1. Chaka Demus and Pliers – “Twist And Shout”
Holding on to the number one spot for a second week are Chaka Demus and Pliers with their cover of this old classic that was originally recorded by The Top Notes. Can they make it three in a row, or will D:Ream, East 17 or K7 claim their first number one? There’s only one way to find out…
