UK Top 40 Singles Chart for Sunday 16th January 1994
So this was the chart that Radio 1 DJ Bruno Brookes broadcast from 4pm-7pm with data from the GALLUP computer based on record sales from Monday 10th to Saturday 15th January 1994.
This is how the charts USED to look with new entries, climbers and non-movers, all based solely on record purchases. This week, thirty years ago, there were twelve new entrys, one re-entry, ten climbers and one non-mover! And it was announced like this…
40. Bryan Adams – “Please Forgive Me” With just over three months now in the UK top 40, Bryan Adams is on the way out and the first of two songs from him drops fifteen places.
39. Meat Loaf – “Bat Out Of Hell” The first of two Meat Loaf singles is also on the way out as the title track of his debut album takes a massive dive of twenty places.
38. Cyndi Lauper – “Who Let In The Rain?” Going down six places is the new single from Cyndi Lauper, having been a new entry this time last week for her.
37. Meat Loaf – “I’d Do Anything For Love…” Here comes Meat Loaf again and this time it’s his former number one which celebrates four months on the UK top 40 with a hefty slide of twenty four places.
36. Apollo 440 – “Astral America” Our first new entry is a top 40 debut this week for British dance act Apollo 440 who finally get a chart hit.
35. Cher with Beavis and Butthead – “I Got You Babe” Cher is back this week with her former chart topper from 1967, which later went to No.1 in 1985 with UB40 and Chrissie Hynde. This time she’s ‘accompanied’ by cartoon characters Beavis and Butthead!
34. EYC – “Feelin’ Alright” With seven weeks on our chart, EYC go down ten places with their debut single and hopefully we shall see them again this year…
33. Domino – “Ghetto Jam” There’s also a top 40 debut for American rapper ‘Domino’, who took this into the US top ten late last year.
32. Thomas Dolby – “Hyperactive” Thomas Dolby comes back to the top 40 in 1994 but it’s with a re-release of his top twenty charting single from ten years ago!
31. Dr. Dre – “Nuthin’ But A ‘G’ Thang” American rapper Dr. Dre aka Andre Young makes his UK chart debut this week with this, his second single release.
30. Daryl Hall – “Stop Loving Me, Stop Loving You” Daryl Hall returns to the UK top thirty for the first time in eight years this week as he goes up seven places.
29. Soul Asylum – “Black Gold” While Soul Asylum return with a new entry after a hugely successful, 1993, particularly with the re-issue of “Runaway Train”.
28. Loni Clark – “You” American singer Loni Clark makes her UK top 40 debut this week after releasing her debut single last Summer.
27. Shabba Ranks and Patra – “Family Affair” They were non-movers last week, but Shabba Ranks and Patra depart the top twenty a week on, down nine places.
26. DJ Duke – “Blow Your Whistle” While DJ Duke has the blow his whistle outside the top twenty after just one week there with a fall of eleven places.
25. Joe – “I’m In Luv” Joseph Thomas comes to the UK top 40 for 1994 with his debut single. He released his debut album back home last Summer.
24. The The – “Dis-Infected” (EP) Having returned to the top twenty for the first time in five years last week, The The leave and fall seven places.
23. Mr. Blobby – “Mr. Blobby” The Christmas number one from Mr. Blobby goes down fourteen places and leaves the top ten in ‘his’ eighth week with us.
22. Garth Brooks – “The Red Strokes” American Country singer Garth Brooks returns to the UK top 40 for the first time in three years with this new entry, which is only his second to make it this far here.
21. Take That – “Babe” For once, Take That are above Mr. Blobby! Their Christmas runner up is down eleven places and exits the upper half of the chart.
20. Inspiral Carpets – “Saturn 5” The Inspiral Carpets are back in the top twenty with a brand new entry and the first single to come from their new album that’s coming in a few months time.
19. Peabo Bryson and Regina Belle – “A Whole New World” Peabo Bryson and Regina Belle remain in the top twenty for a fifth week with their theme from ‘Aladdin’ but it’s down five places.
18. Depeche Mode – “In Your Room” There’s a new entry for Depeche Mode with the fourth single to come from “Songs of Faith And Devotion” which is also the fourth to debut in the top twenty.
17. Ce Ce Peniston – “I’m In The Mood” Ce Ce Peniston made her return to the UK chart last week with this song, but seven days later, it drops one place.
16. Bobby Brown and Whitney Houston – “Something In Common” Whitney is back in the chart and this time with something original and she’s brought along her new partner Bobby Brown with her, which is his first since late 1992.
15. Phil Collins – “Everyday” We have two joint highest climbers this week of thirteen places and Phil Collins is one of them as he returns to the top twenty.
14. Def Leppard – “Action” Def Leppard also take action and return to the upper half of the chart with their latest, which goes up eight places.
13. Toni Braxton – “Breathe Again” Newcomer Toni Braxton is the other joint highest climber of thirteen places as she makes her debut in the UK top twenty.
12. Bee Gees – “For Whom The Bell Tolls” The Bee Gees leave the top ten this week as they fall four places with their biggest selling single of this decade.
11. Dina Carroll – “The Perfect Year” And just slipping out of the top ten is Dina Carroll as she falls five places with her second top five hit.
10. Bitty McLean – “Here I Stand” Bitty McLean returns to the top ten for a second time this week as his new single climbs eleven places.
9. Haddaway – “I Miss You” And finally, after six weeks, Haddaway also returns to the top ten with a climb of two, which means all three of his singles have now made it this far.
8. Eternal – “Save Our Love” Also returning to the top ten with their second single are Eternal, who go up four places with the follow up to “Stay”.
7. Tori Amos – “Cornflake Girl” This week’s highest new entry comes from Tori Amos with brand new music, and in doing so, she gets her first UK top ten hit!
6. East 17 – “It’s Alright” Two months in and East 17 are still flying high with this track, although it appears to have peaked as they fall three places from number three.
5. Culture Beat – “Anything” Going nowhere are Culture Beat, who were last week’s highest new entry, but fail to make any progress in their second.
4. Bryan Adams, Rod Stewart and Sting – “All For Love” The three musketeers – Bryan Adams, Rod Stewart and Sting – are on the rise as they climb three places with their collaboration.
3. K7 – “Come Baby Come” K7 is still going after seven weeks on the chart. This week he moves into the UK top three, up one place.
2. Chaka Demus and Pliers – “Twist And Shout” Having been number one for the last two weeks, Chaka Demus and Pliers fall one place and off the top to make way for someone else…
1. D:Ream – “Things Can Only Get Better” …going one place the other way are D:Ream, who take the third release of this single to the very top of the chart to become the biggest sellers of all! But can they keep it, or will K7 ‘come’ to the top or Bryan, Rod and Sting sing it to the top? There’s only one way to find out…
