UK Top 40 Singles Chart for 22nd January 1984
So this was the chart that Radio 1 DJ Simon Bates broadcast from 5pm-7pm with data from the GALLUP computer based on record sales.
This is how the charts USED to look with new entries, climbers and non-movers, all based solely on record purchases. This week, forty years ago, there were seven new entrys, fifteen climbers and one non-mover! And it was announced like this…
40. Elbow Bones and The Racketeers – “A Night In New York” American collective Elbow Bones and The Racketeers make their UK chart debut this week with our first new entry!
39. ABC – “SOS” ABC made their chart debut in 1981 and return in 1984 with this new entry, which comes from their most recent album, “Beauty Stab”.
38. Culture Club – “Victims” Culture Club are the victims of another big slump as they drop sixteen places after two months around with this one.
37. Tina Turner – “Let’s Stay Together” We also prepare to wave goodbye to Tina Turner with her last release of 1983, which is down ten places.
36. Eartha Kitt – “Where Is My Man?” Actress, singer and dancer Eartha Kitt is still looking for her man and she’s looking for him one place higher than last week.
35. Thomas Dolby – “Hyperactive” There’s a new entry for composer Thomas Dolby next, which becomes only his second single to make the top 40, his first was “Windpower” in 1982.
34. Musical Youth – “Sixteen” Musical Youth returned to the chart last week with this track, only the second from their current album to do so. This one is up just one place.
33. The Manhattan Transfer – “Spice Of Life” Former chart toppers The Manhattan Transfer are back in the UK top 40 this year, their first single to make it since “Twilight Zone” in 1980.
32. Roland Rat Superstar – “Rat Rapping” Rapping his way out of the top 40 is Roland Rat Superstar as he goes down eleven this week with his debut single.
31. Rick Springfield – “Human Touch” Going the other way is Rick Springfield as he goes up eight places in week two with his first UK top 40 single.
30. Whitesnake – “Give Me More Time” Not such good news for Whitesnake as they slip back one place with their latest offering. The band’s album “Slide It In” is out in two weeks time.
29. Madonna – “Holiday” American singer Madonna climbs eleven places with her very first UK hit single. The song is produced by John Benitez, who calls himself ‘Jellybean’.
28. Paul Young – “Love Of The Common People” Paul Young leaves the top twenty as he goes down fourteen places with the re-issue of his second single.
27. Michael Jackson – “Thriller” And so does Michael Jackson as the title track of his album falls nine places and out of the upper half of our chart.
26. The Smiths – “What Difference Does It Make?” We have a new entry next from The Smiths as they score their second chart hit and the follow up to last years “This Charming Man”.
25. The Thompson Twins – “Hold Me Now” Falling thirteen this week are The Thompson Twins with the third of their three top ten hits from last year.
24. Kenny Rogers and Dolly Parton – “Islands In The Stream” With three months in the UK top 40 now, Kenny Rogers and Dolly Parton fall fourteen places with their hugely successful duet.
23. Kool and The Gang – “Straight Ahead” Kool and The Gang register two months with this one and they too leave the top twenty here, down four places.
22. The Alarm – “Where Were You Hiding When The Storm Broke?” …ask The Alarm, and that question takes them twelve places higher than their new entry position of last week!
21. The Police – “King Of Pain” The Police are also on the move but they go down four and out of the top twenty after just one week with this one.
20. Simple Minds – “Speed Me To Your Love” Simple Minds are back in 1984 with a big new entry that follows on from “Waterfront” to give the band two out of two top twenty hits from their latest album.
19. The Icicle Works – “Love Is A Wonderful Colour” Going down four this week are The Icicle Works with their very first. The band will release their debut album in two months time.
18. Billy Joel – “Tell Her About It” Billy Joel tells her about it but out of the top ten this week, down ten places from number eight in his eighth week!
17. Echo and The Bunnymen – “The Killing Moon” This week’s highest new entry comes from Echo and The Bunnymen with the first new song from them and with a new album that’s currently in production.
16. Lionel Richie – “Running With The Night” Lionel Richie departs the top ten this week with the follow up to “All Night Long”. He’s down seven places.
15. Status Quo – “Marguerita Time” And following him are Status Quo as they too leave the top ten, down eight places as the song clocks up two months in the top 40.
14. Matthew Wilder – “Break My Stride” Someone new to the upper half of the chart is Matthew Wilder and he bags this week’s highest climber of seventeen places!
13. Gloria Gaynor – “I Am What I Am” Also moving into the top twenty is Gloria Gaynor as she goes up eleven places in her third week on the chart.
12. Fiction Factory – “(Feels Like) Heaven” The Fiction Factory keep this new intake going as they go up sixteen with their new entry from last week.
11. Eurythmics – “Here Comes The Rain Again” Dave and Annie of the Eurythmics debuted in the top twenty last week, but they too are climbing in week two and are up eight places.
10. Cyndi Lauper – “Girls Just Wanna Have Fun” American singer Cyndi Lauper made her UK top 40 debut last week with this track and makes really good progress a week on as she flies into the top ten, up thirteen places.
9. China Crisis – “Wishful Thinking” As does last week’s highest climber from China Crisis as they go up seven, seven days later to put them in the top ten for the very first time.
8. Big Country – “Wonderland” Big Country are back in the top ten for 1984 as their latest climbs five places to give the band their third.
7. Snowy White – “Bird Of Paradise” Having made his top ten debut a couple of weeks ago, Snowy White may have peaked as this single drops down one place.
6. John Lennon – “Nobody Told Me” We have two former Beatles in the top ten this week as last week’s highest new entry from John Lennon goes up five places.
5. Shakin’ Stevens and Bonnie Tyler – “A Rockin’ Good Way” Shakin’ Stevens and Bonnie Tyler continue to rock in a good way, but don’t move any further up or down this week.
4. Howard Jones – “What Is Love?” Down one again this week goes Howard Jones with his highest charting single to date, which has now been on release for ten weeks.
3. Joe Fagin – “That’s Livin’ Alright” Going up one is the title song from the TV series Auf Wiedersehen Pet that is performed by Joe Fagin as he goes top three.
2. Paul McCartney – “Pipes Of Peace” Here comes the other Beatle, Paul McCartney, but his number one of the last two weeks is no more and he drops down one place.
1. Frankie Goes To Hollywood – “Relax” He makes way for Frankie Goes To Hollywood as they go up one place to take their debut single to the very top of the chart, three months since it was released! But can they keep it, or will Joe Fagin, John Lennon or someone else be number one next week? There’s only one way to find out…
