UK Top 40 Singles Chart for Sunday 23rd January 1994

So this was the chart that Radio 1 DJ Bruno Brookes broadcast from 4pm-7pm with data from the GALLUP computer based on record sales from Monday 17th to Saturday 22nd January 1994.

This is how the charts USED to look with new entries, climbers and non-movers, all based solely on record purchases.
This week, thirty years ago, there were eight new entrys, eight climbers and four non-movers! And it was announced like this…

40. Shabba Ranks and Patra – “Family Affair”
Shabba Ranks and Patra remain a family affair in the top 40 for a sixth week as their version of this song falls thirteen places.

39. Domino – “Ghetto Jam”
Following his debut last week, DJ and producer Domino also goes down, his first UK top 40 hit drops six places.

38. Oui3 – “Facts Of Life”
Our first new entry this week comes from Oui3, back for 1994 after twice releasing “For What It’s Worth” in 1993.

37. Take That – “Babe”
Take That get a seventh week in the top 40 with their former one week chart topper, which is down sixteen places.

36. Loni Clark – “U”
While Loni Clark falls eight with her new entry of last week. This is her second release but her first to make the UK top 40.

35. Mr. Blobby – “Mr. Blobby”
The Christmas number one is still with us but Mr. Blobby falls twelve places with his self-titled single, which racks up nine weeks on the chart.

34. Joe Roberts – “Lover”
British singer Joe Roberts makes his debut on the top 40 this week with this song, having released his debut back in 1992.

33. The The – “Dis-infected” (EP)
The The survive a third week in the top 40 with their comeback EP, but it’s down nine places this week.

32. Daryl Hall – “Stop Loving Me, Stop Loving You”
John Oates mate Daryl Hall is also going down in his third week on the chart as he exits the top thirty, down two.

31. Dr. Dre – “Nuthin’ But A G Thang”
Going nowhere after his arrival this time last week is US rapper Dr. Dre, who does absolutely ‘nuthin’ at all in week two.

30. Pauline Henry – “Can’t Take Your Love”
Pauline Henry gets a new entry with her second single and the follow up to last year’s top twenty hit, “Feel Like Making Love”.

29. Ce Ce Peniston – “I’m In The Mood”
Week three finds the new Ce Ce Peniston single down twelve places as she leaves the UK top twenty with her first release for over a year.

28. Def Leppard – “Action”
Following her are Def Leppard, who are down fourteen places with the second single to come from their album “Retro Active”.

27. Peabo Bryson and Regina Belle – “A Whole New World”
The ‘Aladdin’ song from Peabo Bryson and Regina Belle reaches eight weeks on the chart and it’s also down eight places.

26. Soul Asylum – “Black Gold”
Climbing three are Soul Asylum with the follow up to their much more successful re-release of “Runaway Train”.

25. Inspiral Carpets – “Saturn 5”
The brand new single from the Inspiral Carpets doesn’t do so well in its second week as the song falls five places.

24. Dina Carroll – “The Perfect Year”
Falling thirteen is “The Perfect Year” from Dina Carroll, with two months on the chart now for her second top five hit.

23. Thomas Dolby – “Hyperactive”
Going the other way is Thomas Dolby with the re-issue of his 1984 single as he climbs nine places, heading to the top twenty where it peaked ten years ago.

22. Joe – “I’m In Luv”
American singer Joe made his UK chart debut last week with this song and he too climbs the chart in his second, up just three for him.

21. Phil Collins – “Everyday”
Phil Collins was one of last week’s joint highest climbers, but a week on and that’s that as the song goes down six places.

20. Celine Dion – “The Power Of Love”
The last time we saw Canadian singer Celine Dion, it was with the man at No.27 in 1992. She’s back in the UK top 40 this week with a cover of Jennifer Rush‘s number one hit from 1985.

19. Bee Gees – “For Whom The Bell Tolls”
The Bee Gees register ten weeks on the chart with this number and they are still top twenty but down seven places.

18. Therapy – “Nowhere”
Therapy return to the top twenty this week with a new entry keeping up the tradition of their four past singles released.

17. Richard Marx – “Now And Forever”
Also back with a big new entry is Richard Marx, who lands his biggest hit here since “Hazard” in the Spring of 1992.

16. Bobby Brown and Whitney Houston – “Something In Common”
Bobby and Whitney have something in common together right now and their first duet together has something in common with last week, as it’s a non-mover!

15. ZZ Top – “Pincushion”
ZZ Top are back in the UK top twenty for the first time in two years with this new entry, which is the first single to come from a new album they have out called “Antenna”.

14. Bitty McLean – “Here I Stand”
Bitty McLean did stand in the top ten for one week, but his latest single is out a week later and down four places.

13. Garth Brooks – “The Red Shoes”
Making his first appearance in the UK top twenty is Country singer Garth Brooks as his latest single goes up nine places.

12. Eternal – “Save Our Love”
Nevermind saving Eternal‘s love, what about their chart position? A drop of four places puts them right back to where they came in three weeks ago!

11. East 17 – “It’s Alright”
East 17 are alright nine weeks on but they are out of the top ten for the first time with this single, which goes down five places.

10. Haddaway – “I Miss You”
Haddaway‘s third UK top ten hit remains so, but it drops back one place after six weeks of solid climbing.

9. Enigma – “Return To Innocence”
This week’s highest new entry sees the return of producer Michael Cretu aka Enigma, who debuted and were last seen at the end of 1990 with his number one hit “Sadeness”.

8. Depeche Mode – “In Your Room”
While this week’s highest climber comes from Depeche Mode as they return to the top ten with a climb of ten places.

7. Toni Braxton – “Breathe Again”
Last week’s highest climber came from UK chart newcomer Toni Braxton and she moves into the top ten in week three, up six places.

6. Culture Beat – “Anything”
Having been non-movers for all of their previous two weeks on the chart, Culture Beat slip out of the top five, down one place.

5. Chaka Demus and Pliers – “Twist And Shout”
Falling three is the former number one from Chaka Demus and Pliers, the third of their three singles to make the top five here.

4. Tori Amos – “Cornflake Girl”
Last week’s highest new entry from Tori Amos moves up three places in its second week, making this a new high for the singer here in the UK.

3. K7 – “Come Baby Come”
Two months on and K7 is still riding high in the UK with his debut single, although week eight finds the song a non-mover.

2. Bryan Adams, Rod Stewart and Sting – “All For Love”
Those gallant musketeers – Bryan Adams, Rod Stewart and Sting – are up two this week to take the number two spot.

1. D:Ream – “Things Can Only Get Better”
Holding on to the number one spot, however, are D:Ream for a second week. Things can’t get any better than that! But can they make it three in a row, or will Bryan, Rod and Sting battle their way up, or perhaps Tori Amos will claim her first number one. There’s only one way to find out…
