So this was the chart that Radio 1 DJ Simon Bates broadcast from 5pm-7pm with data from the GALLUP computer based on record sales from .

This is how the charts USED to look with new entries, climbers and non-movers, all based solely on record purchases.
This week, forty years ago, there were six new entrys, twelve climbers and three non-movers! And it was announced like this…

40. ABC – “SOS”
Yes, send an SOS out as the latest single from ABC goes down one place having been a new entry this time last week!

39. Eartha Kitt – “Where Is My Man?”
Eartha Kitt has given up as her first hit here in three decades falls three places after a month on the UK top 40.

38. Nik Kershaw – “Wouldn’t It Be Good?”
British singer Nik Kershaw joins the top 40 for the first time this week with our first new entry with his second single.

37. Michael Jackson – “Thriller”
Spooks galore! Michael Jackson slides ten places this week after three months of ghooling around with this one.

36. Kool and The Gang – “Straight Ahead”
Falling thirteen are Kool and The Gang with their latest, which weighs in with nine week inside the top 40.

35. Shannon – “Let The Music Play”
American singer Shannon debuts here with her debut single this week, which has already been a top ten success stateside.

34. Billy Joel – “Tell Her About It”
Billy Joel leaves the top twenty and falls sixteen places with the follow up to his big number one of last year.

33. Elbow Bones and The Racketeers – “A Night In New York”
Going up seven places and off the bottom in their second week are Elbow Bones and The Racketeers as they climb the chart.

32. Kenny Rogers and Dolly Parton – “Islands In The Stream”
Kenny Rogers and Dolly Parton go down eight this week and out of the top thirty after three months with this hit.

31. The Icicle Works – “Love Is A Wonderful Colour”
It’s been just four weeks but The Icicle Works look as if they are going to leave us with their first hit single which is down twelve places.

30. The Thompson Twins – “Hold Me Now”
The Thompson Twins reach three months with their best charting single to date and they still top thirty, but down five places.

29. Thomas Dolby – “Hyperactive”
Thomas Dolby continues to be hyperactive and climbs six places, which makes this his highest charting here!

28. Status Quo – “Marguerita Time”
Status Quo drop thirteen places this week and out of the upper half of the chart with the third single from “Back To Back”.

27. Musical Youth – “Sixteen”
It’s a good week for Musical Youth as they go up seven places with their seventh single to reach the top 40.

26. The Manhattan Transfer – “Spice Of Life”
The Manhattan Transfer also enjoy a good second week for them as they also go top thirty also with a climb of seven.

25. Juan Martin – “Love Theme from The Thorn Birds”
Spanish musician Juan Martin comes to the UK top 40 for the first time this week with the theme music from the TV series The Thorn Birds.

24. Lionel Richie – “Running With The Night”
Going down eight places is Lionel Richie. The song has been out for ten weeks but only four of those have been in the top 40.

23. Rick Springfield – “Human Touch”
Rick Springfield continues to have a human touch and that gives him another boost, this week of eight places.

22. The Alarm – “Where Were You Hiding When The Storm Broke?”
The Alarm do indeed go into hiding as the storm stops them from going any further and forces them to be a non-mover.

21. Simple Minds – “Speed Your Love To Me”
And the big new entry from Simple Minds last week fares even worse as it slips back one place and out of the top twenty!

20. The Smiths – “What Difference Does It Make?”
The Smiths return to the top twenty for 1984 with their new release, which climbs six places in its second week.

19. Snowy White – “Bird Of Paradise”
For Snowy White, it’s down and out of the top ten with a drop of twelve places for his first chart hit.

18. The Thompson Twins – “Doctor Doctor”
Not content with having one hit on the chart, The Thompson Twins deliver a second with this big new entry!

17. Gloria Gaynor – “I Am What I Am”
Will Gloria Gaynor survive? Not with this track as her big comeback peaks and goes down four places this week.

16. Howard Jones – “What Is Love?”
It’s not just Snowy White that takes a big fall out of the top ten, Howard Jones follows his lead and also drops twelve places.

15. China Crisis – “Wishful Thinking”
And having scored their first top ten hit last week, China Crisis are down and out after just seven days with a fall of six places.

14. John Lennon – “Nobody Told Me”
The top ten clearout continues with Beatle John Lennon down seven after just seven days himself with this new track.

13. Madonna – “Holiday”
American singer and dancer Madonna has had a great week of sales as her first UK charting single goes up sixteen places, and it’s this week’s highest climber!

12. Duran Duran – “New Moon On Monday”
Chart toppers Duran Duran return in 1984 with this new entry, which is the second single to come from their album, “Seven And The Ragged Tiger”.

11. Shakin’ Stevens and Bonnie Tyler – “A Rockin’ Good Way”
And we make space for another new entry in the top ten this week as Shakin’ Stevens and Bonnie Tyler are both down six places and out.

10. Big Country – “Wonderland”
We start this new look top ten with Big Country still here but down two places with the follow up to “Chance”.

9. Echo and The Bunnymen – “The Killing Moon”
Joining the top ten is last week’s highest new entry, which came from Echo and The Bunnymen, as they go up eight places.

8. Eurythmics – “Here Comes The Rain Again”
Also joining the big ten this week are the Eurythmics as they go up three places to give Dave and Annie four out of four top ten hits from the album “Touch”!

7. Paul McCartney – “Pipes Of Peace”
There is still one Beatle in the top ten and it’s the former number one from Paul McCartney, which sinks five places this week.

6. Fiction Factory – “(Feels Like) Heaven”
Scottish band Fiction Factory make their chart debut a top ten hit as they rise six places in week three.

5. Matthew Wilder – “Break My Stride”
As does Matthew Wilder, who was last week’s highest climber and goes up nine a week later to arrive here.

4. Queen – “Radio Ga Ga”
This week’s highest new entry comes from Queen with a brand new song that is the first to come from a new album they will be releasing at the end of next month.

3. Joe Fagin – “That’s Livin’ Alright”
Joe Fagin’s title song from the TV series Auf Wiedersehen Pet is a non-mover this week, holing the number three spot.

2. Cyndi Lauper – “Girls Just Wanna Have Fun”
It’s been another excellent week for American singer Cyndi Lauper as she goes up eight places and moves into second place.

1. Frankie Goes To Hollywood – “Relax”
But holding on to the top spot for a second week are Frankie Goes To Hollywood with this controversial number! Can they make it three in a row or will Cyndi Lauper, Queen or perhaps Matthew Wilder break their stride this time next week? There’s only one way to find out…
