UK Top 40 Singles Chart for 5th February 1984

So this was the chart that Radio 1 DJ Simon Bates broadcast from 5pm-7pm with data from the GALLUP computer based on record sales from.

This is how the charts USED to look with new entries, climbers and non-movers, all based solely on record purchases.
This week, forty years ago, there were eight new entrys, thirteen climbers and two non-movers! And it was announced like this…

40. Slade – “Run Runaway”
Slade are back after their two Christmas singles on the chart and it’s with something new this time as the band get ready for the release of a new album very soon.

39. Lionel Richie – “Running With The Night”
sliding fifteen places is Lionel Richie with his latest. His latest album, “Can’t Slow Down”, is now multi-Platinum certified on both sides of the Atlantic.

38. The Thompson Twins – “Hold Me Now”
The Thompson Twins still have two songs on the chart this week, the elder of the two is down eight places after thirteen weeks with us.

37. Ultravox – “One Small Day”
Ultravox are back for 1984 with new material and a new album on the horizon. This is the first track from it and is their tenth to make the top 40.

36. Break Machine – “Street Dance”
American group Break Machine released their debut single a week ago and here it is breaking into the UK top 40!

35. Simple Minds – “Speed Your Love To Me”
Going down fourteen places in their third week on the chart are Simple Minds with the follow up to “Waterfront”.

34. Swans Way – “Soul Train”
Making their debut on the chart are British band Swans Way with what is their second single release. The band have an album in production at the moment too.

33. Elbow Bones and The Racketeers – “A Night In New York”
One week in New York is not enough for Elbow Bones and The Racketeers as they spend a second in the same position as non-movers.

32. Nik Kershaw – “Wouldn’t It Be Good”
Week two sees Nik Kershaw going up six places with his second top 40 charting single. This man won’t let the sun go down on him just yet!

31. Nena – “99 Red Balloons”
German singer Gabriele Susanne Kerner comes to the UK chart for the first time this week. Under her stage name of Nena, she released her first single in 1982.

30. Rockwell – “Somebody’s Watching Me”
With more than a hint of Michael Jackson about it, Rockwell makes his UK chart debut this week here in the UK!

29. Marillion – “Punch And Judy”
Marillion made their top 40 debut last year with “He Knows You Know” and make it three in a row with this new entry.

28. The Alarm – “Where Were You Hiding When The Storm Broke?”
The Alarm went into hiding last week as non-movers with this track, but set off again, only down six places.

27. Shannon – “Let The Music Play”
American singer Shannon does well in her second week on the UK chart as she goes up eight places with her very first release.

26. Madness – “Michael Caine”
Madness bag this week’s highest new entry with this ode to actor Michael Caine! Let’s hope no doors will be blown off in the process!

25. Howard Jones – “What Is Love?”
Three months now for this Howard Jones single on the chart and he leaves the top twenty, down nine places.

24. Rick Springfield – “Human Touch”
Rick Springfield can muster just four weeks with his latest and it’s also going down, missing the top twenty as it falls one place.

23. Musical Youth – “Sixteen”
Musical Youth still remain youthful in their fourth week, however, and go up four places a month after this one turned up.

22. Snowy White – “Bird Of Paradise”
Having made the top ten with this track, composer Snowy White drops out of the top twenty this week, down just three places.

21. John Lennon – “Nobody Told Me”
Going down seven is former Beatle the late John Lennon with his ‘brand new’ recording, the first from what will be his last album called “Milk And Honey”.

20. Thomas Dolby – “Hyperactive”
Thomas Dolby continues to be hyperactive in his fourth week and it takes him into the top twenty with a climb of nine places.

19. The Manhattan Transfer – “Spice Of Life”
The Manhattan Transfer join Thomas as they make their UK top twenty debut with a climb of seven, also with four weeks on the chart.

18. Paul McCartney – “Pipes Of Peace”
Two behind John Lennon is his former fellow band mate Paul McCartney with his former chart topper, which is down eleven this week.

17. China Crisis – “Wishful Thinking”
The boys from China Crisis slip just two places this week having departed the top ten just seven days ago.

16. Shakin’ Stevens and Bonnie Tyler – “A Rockin’ Good Way”
Also departing the top ten last week were Shakin’ Stevens and Bonnie Tyler with this track which rocks a bad way down five a week later.

15. Gloria Gaynor – “I Am What I Am”
That’s all good news for Gloria Gaynor, who went down last week, but comes back up again, two places higher!

14. Big Country – “Wonderland”
Down four this week and out of the top ten come Big Country with their third single. The band are working on new material for their second album.

13. The Smiths – “What Difference Does It Make?”
It makes all the difference once again to The Smiths as they go up seven places with their latest in week three.

12. Juan Martin – “Love Theme From The Thorn Birds”
Spanish musician Juan Martin has a great second week and with a climb of thirteen places, he is one of two joint highest on this week’s top 40.

11. Echo and The Bunnymen – “The Killing Moon”
It’s one week in and one week out for Echo and The Bunnymen as the slip out of the top ten after just seven days, down two places.

10. Eurythmics – “Here Comes The Rain Again”
The Eurythmics remain top ten this week, but down two places as well with the follow up to “Right By Your Side”.

9. Duran Duran – “New Moon On Monday”
While Duran Duran return to the big ten for 1984 with their new entry from last week, which climbs three.

8. Fiction Factory – “(Feels Like) Heaven”
Not feeling like heaven this week are Fiction Factory, who nearly made it but feel just short and drop down two a week on.

7. Madonna – “Holiday”
Taking her holiday at the beginning of the year is American singer Madonna. Her highest climber of last week goes up six to take her into the UK top ten for the very first time.

6. Joe Fagin – “That’s Livin’ Alright”
Going down three from number three where he’s been a non-mover is Joe Fagin with the song from the TV series Auf Wiedersehen Pet.

5. The Thompson Twins – “Doctor Doctor”
Here’s the other song from The Thompson Twins and also this week’s other joint highest climber of thirteen places!

4. Matthew Wilder – “Break My Stride”
Striding out once again is Matthew Wilder as he goes up one place in the top five in his fifth week on the chart.

3. Cyndi Lauper – “Girls Just Wanna Have Fun”
Cyndi Lauper made it to number two last week but that’s it for now as she drops back one place a week later.

2. Queen – “Radio Ga Ga”
She makes way for last week’s highest new entry from Queen, which goes up two places into the number two slot.

1. Frankie Goes To Hollywood – “Relax”
Holding on to the top spot for a third week are Frankie Goes To Hollywood with their debut single. But can they make it a fourth, or will Queen dethrone them, or perhaps Matthew Wilder break a big stride? There’s only one way to find out…
