UK Top 40 Singles Chart for 12th February 1984

So this was the chart that Radio 1 DJ Simon Bates broadcast from 5pm-7pm with data from the GALLUP computer based on record sales.

This is how the charts USED to look with new entries, climbers and non-movers, all based solely on record purchases.
This week, forty years ago, there were seven new entrys, fourteen climbers and four non-movers! And it was announced like this…

40. Rick Springfield – “Human Touch”
Rick Springfield has the human touch just for one more week as he falls sixteen places in his sixth week.

39. Snowy White – “Bird Of Paradise”
Taking an even bigger ‘hit’ is Snowy White as he descends seventeen, also with six weeks inside the top 40.

38. Hot Chocolate – “I Gave You My Heart”
Our first new entry comes from Hot Chocolate, back in the top 40 for a second time with the third single from their album “Love Shot”.

37. China Crisis – “Wishful Thinking”
Six weeks seems to be the running theme this week for those on the way out and China Crisis are another, down a whopping twenty places.

36. Matt Bianco – “Get Out Of Your Lazy Bed”
Making their debut with their debut single is the group that’s headed by singer Matt Bianco as they arrive in the top 40.

35. Shakin’ Stevens and Bonnie Tyler – “A Rockin’ Good Way”
With seven weeks are Shakin’ Stevens and Bonnie Tyler with their former top five hit, which is down nineteen places.

34. Slade – “Run Runaway”
Slade returned to the top 40 last week with something less Christmasy and it goes up six places, seven days later.

33. Elbow Bones and The Racketeers – “A Night In New York”
Nights for Elbow Bones and The Racketeers in New York last a long time…and so does their time at No.33, as they are non-movers for a THIRD week running!

32. Marillion – “Punch And Judy”
I’m sure Marillion won’t see the funny side this week as their new entry from last week falls three places.

31. Henry Mancini Orchestra – “Main Theme From The Thorn Birds”
The Thorn Birds are taking over the UK top 40 with the love theme yet to come, but first there’s a new entry for film composer Henry Mancini and his orchestra!

30. Musical Youth – “Sixteen”
Musical Youth have run out of youth and vitality as their latest goes down seven places after five weeks on the chart.

29. Ultravox – “One Small Day”
Meanwhile, Ultravox climb eight places with their latest single and first from a new album that’s in April.

28. Billy Joel – “An Innocent Man”
Billy Joel is kicking them out thick and fast, this is his third in just six months and it puts him back in the UK chart.

27. Break Machine – “Street Dance”
The boys from Break Machine made their debut this time last week and go up nine places into the top thirty.

26. Kool and The Gang – “Joanna”
Also coming back for more are Kool and The Gang with this new entry, which follows “Straight Ahead” from their new album.

25. Echo and The Bunnymen – “The Killing Moon”
Leaving the upper half of the chart are Echo and The Bunnymen as they go down fourteen places after a month with us.

24. Howard Jones – “Hide And Seek”
There’s a new entry from Howard Jones next with the follow up to his biggest hit yet, “What Is Love?”. Where will this one go…?

23. Gloria Gaynor – “I Am What I Am”
Gloria Gaynor went back up last week but seven days later, she takes a much bigger fall than before of eight places.

22. The Manhattan Transfer – “Spice Of Life”
Just one week for The Manhattan Transfer in the top twenty with this one as they reverse back three places.

21. Big Country – “Wonderland”
And just dropping out are Big Country, down seven, with their most recent top ten hit, in a ‘big’ country!

20. Swans Way – “Soul Train”
Chart newcomers Swans Way enjoy a great week two as they debut in the top twenty with a climb of sixteen places.

19. Shannon – “Let The Music Play”
American singer Shannon makes her debut too in the UK top twenty as week three sees her up eight places.

18. Eurythmics – “Here Comes The Rain Again”
Dave and Annie of the Eurythmics are also moving eight places, but it’s down and out of the top ten with their latest.

17. Thomas Dolby – “Hyperactive”
Thomas Dolby remains hyperactive as he continues his ascent of the chart, this week up three with his biggest hit yet.

16. Fiction Factory – “(Feels Like) Heaven”
The Fiction Factory have been in heaven with their first chart hit, but are so no longer as they drop eight places.

15. Rockwell – “Somebody’s Watching Me”
Rockwell is the alias of singer Kennedy Gordy and together with his friend Michael Jackson, they came up with this and it’s up fifteen places in week two!

14. Nik Kershaw – “Wouldn’t It Be Good?”
Wouldn’t it be good if Nik Kershaw could have a big hit with this song? Well, week three is his best yet as he joins the top twenty, up eighteen places!

13. Madness – “Michael Caine”
Last week’s highest new entry came from Madness with their tribute to the actor and it takes them top twenty a week on, up thirteen places.

12. The Smiths – “What Difference Does It Make?”
…The Smiths keep asking and it keeps rewarding them with an even higher position each week. This week they are up just one.

11. Nena – “99 Red Balloons”
German band Nena came to the UK top 40 last week and really make an impression a week later. A climb of twenty makes them this week’s highest!

10. Juan Martin – “Love Theme From The Thorn Birds”
Here’s more from The Thorn Birds and it’s Juan Martin this time as he moves into the top ten, up two places.

9. Duran Duran – “New Moon On Monday”
Duran Duran are holding on for a new moon and they are also holding onto the same chart position as last week!

8. The Style Council – “My Ever Changing Moods”
The Style Council are back for 1984 and with this week’s highest new entry, which becomes their third to break the top ten.

7. Joe Fagin – “That’s Livin’ Alright”
Joe Fagin is down just one this week with his TV theme tune, the one from Auf Wiedersehen Pet and it’s in week seven.

6. Madonna – “Holiday”
American singer Madonna is still enjoying her holiday here in the UK with her first hit, which goes up one.

5. Matthew Wilder – “Break My Stride”
But for Matthew Wilder, his stride over the last four weeks has been broken as he drops back one place.

4. Cyndi Lauper – “Girls Just Wanna Have Fun”
Also down one is Cyndi Lauper with her debut single. Her debut album is called “She’s So Unusual” and it’s out now.

3. The Thompson Twins – “Doctor Doctor”
The Thompson Twins return to the top three this week up two places with the follow up to “Hold Me Now”.

2. Queen – “Radio Ga Ga”
There’s no go go for Queen with their latest as they stay at number two for a second week unable to sell enough to go top.

1. Frankie Goes To Hollywood – “Relax”
Which means for a fourth week Frankie Goes To Hollywood stay at the top as the biggest sellers of all. But can they go to five, or will The Thompson Twins or someone else put an end to their relaxation? There’s only one way to find out…
