CHARTS: UK Top 40 Singles Chart 6th November 1988

Thirty years ago: UK top 40 singles chart for Sunday 6th November 1988

So this was the chart that Radio 1 DJ Bruno Brookes broadcast from 5-7pm with data from the GALLUP computer based on record sales from Monday 31st October to midnight on Saturday 5th November 1988.

This is how the charts USED to look with new entries, climbers and non-movers, all based solely on record purchases.
This week, thirty years ago, there were seven new entry’s, nine climbers and four non-movers. And it was announced like this…

40. Marc Almond – “Bittersweet”
Starting ‘the 40’ with a new entry from former Soft Cell singer Marc and the follow up to his top 30 hit “Tears Run Rings” in September.

39. Jason Donovan – “Nothing Can Divide Us”
Jason falls 18 places this week with his debut single that’s spent ten weeks in the top 40 in total.

38. Simon Harris – “Here Comes That Sound”
One of last weeks new entry’s climbs two places for DJ and producer Simon Harris this week.

37. The Travelling Wilbury’s – “Handle With Care”
New entry for this super-group with their debut single, that consists of Bob Dylan, Roy Orbison, George Harrison, Jeff Lyne and Tom Petty.

36. Mica Paris – “Breathe Life Into Me”
Another new entry from UK singer Mica with the third single from her debut album “So Good” that was released in September.

35. Level 42 – “Take A Look”
Down three places this week for Level 42 after just one week’s progress to No.32.

34. All About Eve – “What Kind Of Fool?”
New entry for this group who got a top 10 hit earlier this year with “Martha’s Habour”.

33. Kraze – “Party House”
Down four places for this dance chart top five hit after three weeks on the top 40.

32. Barbra Striesand and Don Johnson – “Till I Loved You”
Singer and actress Barbra returns to the UK top 40 with this song from the musical ‘Goya’.

31. Womack and Womack – “Teardrops”
Down twelve this week for Cecil and Linda Womack with their first UK chart hit.

30. Rick Astley – “She Wants To Dance With Me”
Rick is down ten places this week but look out for another single coming in just a few weeks time!

29. Inner City – “Big Fun”
Down seven this week for Kevin and Paris with their debut single which has topped the dance chart and proven a big hit commercially.

28. Phil Collins – “Groovy Kind Of Love”
Former number one Phil is also down ten places this week, but the second single from the ‘Buster’ soundtrack is coming very soon!

27. Beatmasters featuring P.P. Arnold – “Burn It Up”
Down thirteen this week for the Beatmasters with their second single release with more planned.

26. Prince – “I Wish U Heaven”
Climbing five places this week for Prince after he got a new entry last week.

25. Jolly Roger – “Acid Man”
Falling two places this week but it’s No.4 on the dance chart this week.

24. Guns’N’Roses – “Welcome To The Jungle”
Up just one more place this week for Axel Rose and the band from LA.

23. Chris de Burgh – “Missing You”
A big climb of sixteen places this week for Chris after his new entry on last week’s chart.

22. Tanita Tickaram – “Twist In My Sobriety”
Tanita’s third week of climbing see’s her go up another four places.

21. Salt n Pepa – “Twist And Shout”
New entry for this pair with a cover of The Top Notes 1961 classic that was made a hit by The Isley Brothers the following year.

20. Kim Wilde – “Never Trust A Stranger”
Kim falls seven places this week, her album “Close” has now sold over 200,000 copies in the UK!

19. Bobby McFerrin – “Don’t Worry, Be Happy”
Bobby is also down seven places this week with his former No.2 hit.

18. Inxs – “Need You Tonight”
This weeks highest new entry is from this group from Australia who score their first UK top twenty in doing so!

17. Royal House – “Can You Party”
Down three this week for this club anthem that’s No.5 on this weeks dance chart.

16. Wee Papa Girl Rappers – “Wee Rule”
Down six places for this former top ten hit from the sisters from London.

15. The Christians – “Harvest For The World”
Another former Isley Brothers hit on this week’s chart and falling just four places this week.

14. Erasure – “A Little Respect”
Vince and Andy are down five places this week with the third hit from their third studio album “The Innocents”.

13. Whitney Houston – “One Moment In Time”
Whitney is down seven places this week with her two week chart topper from last month.

12. Brian Ferry – “Let’s Stick Together ’88”
Last week’s highest new entry is up sixteen places this week. His original reached No.4 in 1976, can this one better it…?!

11. D Mob – “We Call I Acieed”
Down four this week for this dance chart No.1 hit from Dancin’ Danny D and Gary Haisman.

10. Robert Palmer – “She Makes My Day”
Robert is down just two this week after spending three weeks climbing from No.38 to No.8.

9. Deacon Blue – “Real Gone Kid”
Ricky Ross and the band from Glasgow score their first UK top ten hit this week with a climb of six places!

8. Gloria Estefan and The Miami Sound Machine – “1-2-3”
Another big climber this week is Gloria, Emilio and Co. also up sixteen places with this Latin/pop/dance number.

7. Brother Beyond – “He Ain’t No Competition”
This week’s highest climber is up a whopping TWENTY THREE places for Nathan, Carl, David and Steve and another top ten hit for the seemingly unstoppable Stock Aitken Waterman!

6. Art of Noise featuring Tom Jones – “Kiss”
Down just one place this week for Tom with their cover of Prince’s 1986 UK No.6 hit.

5. Robin Beck – “The First Time”
Last weeks highest climber of twenty two places gets a boost of another twelve this week, perhaps due to THAT soft drink commercial?!

4. Yazz – “Stand Up For Your Love Rights”
Yazz holds firm after climbing seven places last week with her first solo single proper.

3. Milli Vanilli – “Girl You Know It’s True”
Rob and Fab also hold tight this week after four weeks of rapid climbing from the very bottom of the top 40.

2. Kylie Minogue – “Je Ne Sais Pas Pourquoi”
Kylie gets a third week at No.2, she’s still outselling everything below her, with her third UK No.2 hit this year.

1. Enya – “Orinoco Flow”
And the singer from County Donegal gets a third week on top with this track that’s top five in ten countries across Europe now!
