UK Top 40 Singles Chart for Sunday 17th July 1988
So this was the chart that Radio 1 DJ Bruno Brookes broadcast from 5-7pm with data from the GALLUP computer based on record sales from Monday 11th to Saturday 16th July 1988.
This is how the charts USED to look with new entries, climbers and non-movers, all based solely on record purchases.
This week, thirty years ago, there were seven new entry’s, twelve climbers and three non-movers! And it was announced like this…
40. Steven Dante – “I’m Too Scared”
Eighth Wonder said “I’m Not Scared”, but Steven Dante says “I’m Too Scared”! He shouldn’t be with a new entry and a chart return since “The Real Thing” with Jellybean early last year!
39. Shakin’ Stevens – “Feel The Need In Me”
Also back is Shakey with a brand new tune that follows up his big top five hit at the end of last year, “What Do You Want To Make Those Eyes At Me For?”.
38. Alexander O’Neal – “(What Can I Say) To Make You Love Me?”
And back with another track from his “Hearsay” album is Alexander O’Neal. This is the fifth release since “Fake” last Summer, the biggest, to date, is still of course “Criticize“.
37. Eric B and Rakim – “Follow The Leader”
Eric B and Rakim are down twelve this week with their third UK top 40 hit and the only one so far not to reach the top twenty.
36. The Four Tops – “Reach Out – I’ll Be There”
The Four Tops are back on the UK chart for the first time in seven years and with re-release of their 1966 it that made number one both here and in America.
35. The Timelords – “Doctorin’ The Tardis”
The Timelords know all about being number one much more recently than that, in fact, this year, even if it was just for one week. Their former chart topper has been on the top 40 for eight weeks now and slides eight places this week.
34. Will Downing – “In My Dreams”
Will Downing can’t make up his mind what to do this week, so he gets a non-mover with the second single to come from his self-titled debut album that’s out now.
33. The Communards – “There’ More To Love”
Jimmy and Richard go down ten places this week with the most recent single to come from their second album, “Red”.
32. Hazell Dean – “Maybe (We Should Call It A Day)”
Hazell Dean has been on the chart for five weeks with the follow up to “Who’s Leaving Who?” and is also down ten places this week.
31. Desireless – “Voyage Voyage”
While France’s Desireless clock up a ninth week with their big Euro hit from last year, remixed for 1988, which slips just five places.
30. T’Pau – “I Will Be With You”
T’Pau and Hazell Dean have been shadowing each other ever since they joined the chart five weeks ago, but do so no longer as the Shrewsbury band fall just nine places this week.
29. Prince – “Grand Slam”
Prince gets a new entry this week with the follow up to “Alphabet Street” and the second single to come from his new album, “Lovesexy”.
28. Yazz and The Plastic Population – “The Only Way Is Up”
Also making her second chart entry of this year is Yazz, who sang on Coldcut’s “Doctorin’ The House” back in March. She’s back on her own this time, along with her Plastic following. Can they repeat the top ten success of their chart debut?
27. Maxi Priest – “Wild World”
Maxi Priest leaves the top twenty this week after six weeks there with his cover of Cat Stevens’ 1970 number, which is down ten places.
26. INXS – “Never Tear Us Apart”
After two weeks as a non-mover, INXS drop back two places with the latest track to be taken from their now Platinum certified album, “Kick”.
25. Pat Benetar – “All Fired Up”
Pat Benetar made a climb of five places last week with her brand new tune and she does exactly the same seven days on!
24. The Pogues – “Fiesta”
Making a bigger climb are The Pogues, who returned to the chart for the first time this year last week, of twelve places.
23. Bruce Springsteen – “Tougher Than The Rest”
The Boss is down seven this week and out of the UK top twenty with the fifth single from “Tunnel Of Love”, which has just been released internationally.
22. Ziggy Marley and The Melody Makers – “Tomorrow People”
Bob Marley’s son Ziggy and his band are up six this week with their debut single, hoping for a top twenty entry next week.
21. Wee Papa Girl Rappers – “Heat It Up”
As are Sandra and Samantha aka the Wee Papa Girl Rappers with their debut offering, which is up eight more places this week.
20 S-Express – “Superfly Guy”
Mark Moore’s S-Express have already claimed one of this year’s chart toppers and also with their debut single. After two weeks absence, we welcome them back with the follow up, which is also this weeks highest new entry.
19. Phil Collins – “In The Air Tonight”
Meanwhile, Phil Collins is down nine places this week with his reissued 1981 chart hit and Phil is about to begin a cinematic career as we will see him on the big screen later this year as train robber, Buster Edwards.
18. The Pasadenas – “Tribute”
The Pasadenas drop seven this week with their debut single, while production is almost complete on their very first album, which we can expect later this year.
17. Matt Bianco – “Don’t Blame It On That Girl/Wap Bam Boogie”
Matt Bianco’s biggest chart hit yet is down five this week, maybe that’s because he’s offered us not one but two songs at the same time?!
16. Kim Wilde – “You Came”
Kim Wilde made her second chart entry of this year, last week in the hope that she would better “Hey Mister Heartache”. Well, she has certainly done that with a huge leap of twenty two places, which makes her by far, this weeks highest climber!
15. Sabrina – “Boys (Summertime Love)”
Sabrina is out of the top ten this week as she takes her big Euro hit of last Summer seven places lower than last week.
14. Eighth Wonder – “Cross My Heart”
And not such good news for Eighth Wonder, who were hoping for a second top ten hit this week, but sadly they drop back one place only to be disappointed.
13. George Michael – “Monkey”
George Michael brought his “Monkey” with him to the chart last week and is up six places with it this week.
12. Def Leppard – “Love Bites”
Just as Def Leppard also returned to the chart last week with yet another single from their “Hysteria” album, which climbs eight places.
11. Bros – “I Owe You Nothing”
Bros leave the top ten for the very first time with their very first number one, which is down seven places, having spent five weeks in the top five.
10. UB40 and Chrissie Hynde – “Breakfast In Bed”
Still enjoying “Breakfast In Bed” as well as top ten action are UB40 and Pretender Chrissie Hynde, who went back up last week and come back down three places this week.
9. Debbie Gibson – “Foolish Beat”
Debbie Gibson is back in the UK top ten for a second time with a climb of nine places and gaining ever closer to that top spot, where this song went Stateside earlier this year.
8. Mac Band featuring The McCampbell Brothers – “Roses Are Red”
Going up one place this week are the Mac Band and The McCampbell Brothers with their collective first UK chart hit.
7. Tracy Chapman – “Fast Car”
Going the other way is Tracy Chapman with her first UK chart hit, ‘reversing’ two places and out of the top five.
6. The Fat Boys and Chubby Checker – “The Twist”
Having spent two weeks in second place recently and dropping back last week, The Fat Boys and Chubby Checker also leave the top five with a drop of three places this week.
5. Transvision Vamp – “I Want Your Love”
Last week’s highest climber, British band Transvision Vamp, take their very first top 40 hit not only into the top ten but top five with a climb of ten this week.
4. Michael Jackson – “Dirty Diana”
While last week’s highest new entry from Jacko is also up ten places and into the top five, now the fourth single to come from “Bad” to go top ten here.
3. Everything But The Girl – “I Don’t Want To Talk About It”
Ben and Tracey continue to make good progress with their biggest hit to date, which is up two this week while their album, “Idlewild”, is now No.13 on the album chart.
2. Salt’N’Pepa – “Push It”
Salt’N’Pepa stay put for a second week in second position with their first UK chart hit, which has proven more successful over here that in America.
1. Glenn Medeiros – “Nothing’s Gonna Change My Love For You”
Which means for a third week, Glenn Medeiros‘ George Benson cover stays at the very top as the UK’s biggest selling single. But can he make it a full month or will Everything But The Girl, Michael Jackson or even Transvision Vamp claim that prize next week? There’s only one way to find out…
