UK Top 40 Singles Chart for Sunday 1st May 1988
So this was the chart that Radio 1 DJ Bruno Brookes broadcast from 5-7pm with data from the GALLUP computer based on record sales from Monday 25th to Saturday 30th April 1988.
This is how the charts USED to look with new entries, climbers and non-movers, all based solely on record purchases.
This week, thirty years ago, there were six new entry’s, twelve climbers and six non-movers! And it was announced like this…
40. The Mission – “Beyond The Pale”
The Mission go down eight places this week with their second top 40 hit of this year, not matching “Tower of Strength” for chart position, however.
39. Prefab Sprout – “The King Of Rock And Roll”
Prefab Sprout were last in the top 40 three years ago with “When Love Breaks Down”, this week they make their return with the second single to come from their current album, “From Langley park To Memphis”.
38. Tiffany – “Could’ve Been”
Tiffany falls seventeen this week with her second UK single release, eight weeks after she joined us for the second time this year.
37. Deacon Blue – “When Will You Make My Phone Ring?”
Deacon Blue are waiting for that call but three places lower than last week, with their second ever top 40 entry.
36. Derek B – “Bad Young Brother”
Derek B doesn’t waste time. After his “Goodgroove” got us all going two months ago, he scores his second UK top entry with this follow up.
35. The Housemartins – “There Is Always Something There To Remind Me”
The Housemartins were a new entry last week and go up just one place this week with the first new single from their compilations “Now That’s What I Call Quite Good”.
34. Glen Goldsmith – “Dreaming”
Glen Goldsmith has been “Dreaming” for nine weeks now on the top 40, out performing his two previous entry’s, even if he’s down twelve places this week.
33. Taylor Dayne – “Prove Your Love”
Clocking up eight weeks, so far, is Taylor Dayne who is down fourteen places with her second UK top ten hit out of two singles released.
32. Luther Vandross – “I Gave It Up”
He went up last week and it seems Luther Vandross has ‘given up’ this week with a fall of four places with his latest single from the album “Give Me The Reason”.
31. Bros – “Drop The Boy”
Bros ‘drop’ eleven places this week with their second chart hit that comes from their debut album, “Push”, which is out now.
30. The Adventures – “Broken Land”
The Adventures made their top 40 debut last week four years after forming and go up five places this week.
29. Magnum – “Start Talking Love”
Magnum are back on the UK chart with this new entry, the follow up to “Days Of No Trust”, and already their best performance as that song didn’t reach the top thirty!
28. Jellybean featuring Adele Berti – “Just A Mirage”
Jellybean and Adele are down ten places this week and out of the top twenty, where this and three others have ended up.
27. Rob Base and DJ E-Z Rock – “It Takes Two”
After such a big climb last week with their UK chart debut, Rob Base and E-Z Rock slip back three places this week.
26. The Christians – “Born Again”
Going the other way are The Christians with their second release of this year, which was new on last week and is up seven this week.
25. The Primitives – “Out Of Reach”
Last week’s highest new entry came from the returning Primitives who move up just one place higher this week.
24. Joyce Sims – “Walk Away”
Going up five places this week is Joyce Sims, who was the second highest entry last week, and overtaking The Primitives, having both scored top ten hits at the beginning of this year.
23. Brenda Russell – “Piano In The Dark”
Brenda Russell has been around now for six weeks now and you could argue she’s still going strong with a non-mover this week, with her first UK top 40 hit.
22. Narada – “Divine Emotions”
Narada (Michael Walden) returned to the chart last week with this brand new song and goes up eight places this week and looking for a top twenty placing next week.
21. Pebbles – “Girlfriend”
Perri Reid or Pebbles takes her “Girlfriend” down ten places and out of the top twenty this week, her first UK and US hit, her debut, “Love/Hate” only just charted on the US dance chart last year.
20. Patrick Swayze and Wendy Fraser – “She’s Like The Wind”
Patrick and Wendy are down three places this week, but remain in the top twenty with the love song from the film ‘Dirty Dancing’.
19. Jermaine Stewart – “Get Lucky”
Also going down this week is Jermaine Stewart, six places lower than last week and sadly not able to bag a third UK top ten hit.
18. Prince – “Alphabet Street”
Prince is back in the chart with a brand new entry and the first taste of a new album he has coming out later this month.
17. Harry Enfield – “Loadsamoney”
Comedian Harry Enfield makes his chart debut next with a new entry straight into the top twenty with his character/alter ego Loadsamoney from his standup performance.
16. Fleetwood Mac – “Everywhere”
Fleetwood Mac’s latest single from their smash hit album “Tango In The Night” leaves the top ten this week with a fall of six places.
15. Star Turn On 45 Pints – “Pump Up The Bitter”
While last week’s novelty record that entered the chart from Star Turn On 45 Pints has the last laugh with a climb of twenty four places, the biggest my a mile this week!
14. Will Downing – “A Love Supreme”
Will Downing continues to do well, he’s up two this week with his first UK top 40 song that comes from his self-titled debut album that’s out here now.
13. Climie Fisher – “Love Changes Everything”
Simon and Rob leave the top ten as well this week with a drop of six places, nine weeks on and with their biggest hit yet.
12. James Brown – “The Payback Mix (Part One)”
James Brown goes up two this week with “The Payback Mix” of his 1974 single that was never released here in the UK.
11. Pat and Mick – “Let’s All Chant”
And Pat Sharpe and Mick Brown also climb, four places for them, with their Stock Aitken Waterman produced cover of Michael Zager Band’s 1977 disco classic, now three places short of equaling their highest position here eleven years ago.
10. New Order – “Blue Monday ’88”
New Order are back in the UK chart and back with a new mix of their 1983 release which made No.9 first time around. They’re also this week’s highest new entry, just one place lower than they were five years ago!
9. George Michael – “One More Try”
George Michael returned to the top ten last week with this fourth single from his album, “Faith”, which goes back one place this week.
8. The Jackson 5 – “I Want You Back ’88”
The Jackson’s are up another one place this week the new remix of their 1969 No.2 hit. Will they be able to match or beat that next week…?
7. Pet Shop Boys – “Heart”
The Pet Shop Boys former chart topper is down five places this week while the boys are already working on new material for a proposed album later this year!
6. Natalie Cole – “Pink Cadillac”
There’s hardly any movement from hereon in as Natalie Cole is a non-mover this week just outside the top five with her biggest hit in fifteen years.
5. Bananarama – “I Want You Back”
Also staying put are Bananarama with their new recording of “I Want You Back” with Jacqui O’Sullivan to make the numbers add up to three.
4. Hazell Dean – “Who’s Leaving Who?”
And so is Hazell Dean with her chart-equaling high, that still remains the biggest of mall the Stock Aitken Waterman songs on this weeks chart.
3. Danny Wilson – “Mary’s Prayer”
And it’s just the same for Danny Wilson, who, after such a rapid climb over the past three weeks, remain in third place with their song that’s now over a year old!
2. Fairground Attraction – “Perfect”
Leaping over them all is last week’s highest climber from newcomers Fairground Attraction, who are the only movers in the up reaches of the chart, as they take second place with a climb of ten places this week.
1. S-Express – “Theme From S-Express”
But staying on top of the lot for a second week are S-Express with their own ‘theme’ to introduce themselves! Is this just the beginning and will they be able to stay on top for a third week, or can Fairground Attraction be the next act with a debut single to top the UK singles chart? There’s only one way to find out…
