UK Top 40 Singles Chart for Sunday 24th April 1988
So this was the chart that Radio 1 DJ Bruno Brookes broadcast from 5-7pm with data from the GALLUP computer based on record sales from Monday 18th to Saturday 23rd April 1988.
This is how the charts USED to look with new entries, climbers and non-movers, all based solely on record purchases.
This week, thirty years ago, there were seven new entry’s, seventeen climbers and NO non-movers! And it was announced like this…
40. All About Eve – “Every Angel”
They went up last week, they’re going down this week. All About Eve take the title track of their album ten places lower and nearly out.
39. Star Turn On 45 Pints – “Pump Up The Bitter”
It’s novelty song time as British group Star Turn On 45 Pints, who have been recording since 1981, enter the top 40 for the very first time with this ‘tribute’ to MARRS’ chart hit last year, “Pump Up The Volume”.
38. T’Pau – “Sex Talk”
T’Pau are still will us, but down nine places this week with the fifth single to come from their multi-Platinum debut album, “Bridge Of Spies”.
37. Def Leppard – “Armageddon It”
While Def Leppard fall fourteen places with the fifth single to come from their multi-Platinum album, “Hysteria”.
36. The Housemartins – “There Is Always Something There To Remind Me”
The Housemartins are back on the chart with a brand new single this week and a track that features on a forthcoming compilation called “Now That’s What I Call Quite Good”!
35. The Adventurers – “Broken Land”
The Adventures are from Belfast and they’ve been recording since 1984, but, at last, today they score their first ever UK top 40 entry with the lead single from their forthcoming second studio album, that’s due out next month.
34. Deacon Blue – “When Will You Make My Phone Ring?”
Deacon Blue made their second appearance in the top 40 last week with the follow up to “Dignity” and are up four places this week.
33. The Christians – “Born Again”
There’s a new entry for The Christians who return with the follow up to their huge hit in January, “Ideal World”. How far will they go with this one…?
32. The Mission – “Beyond The Pale”
The Mission returned to the chart for a second time this year last week and are up four places with the second single from their current album, “Children”.
31. Aswad – “Don’t Turn Around”
Former chart toppers Aswad are down nine places this week with their recording of Tina Turner’s 1986 B side that’s certainly done big business the world over.
30. Narada – “Divine Emotions”
Narada is, of course, Narada Michael Walden, who returns to the UK top 40 for the first time in nine years with the title track from his forthcoming long player.
29. Joyce Sims – “Walk Away”
Making her return to the chart but only after a few weeks away is Joyce Sims with this new entry and the follow up to her top ten hit, “Come Into My Life”.
28. Luther Vandross – “I Gave It Up”
Going up five places this week is Luther Vandross with the fourth single to come from his hit album, “Give Me The Reason”.
27. Sinitta – “Cross My Broken Heart”
Sinitta took a big drop last week from her top ten position to the bottom of the top twenty, this week she glides, a little less severely, down seven places with her third UK top ten hit single.
26. The Primitives – “Out Of Reach”
The Primitives scored their first chart hit recently with “Crash” and they follow that success with this new song that is this week’s highest new entry.
25. Eighth Wonder – “I’m Not Scared”
Patsy Kensit’s Eighth Wonder are down seven this week with their Pet Shop Boys produced single that’s finally given them a big UK singles chart hit.
24. Rob Base and DJ E-Z Rock – “It Takes Two”
Rob Base and his mate E-Z Rock made their UK top 40 debut last week with this ‘happenin’ tune that gets a big climb of fifteen places this week.
23. Brenda Russell – “Piano In The Dark”
Still climbing after five weeks is Brenda Russell with her UK top 40 debut, up three this week, and the song is taken from her current album, “Get Here”.
22. Glen Goldsmith – “Dreaming”
Soon to release his debut album is Glen Goldsmith and he has three singles already released from it, this one’s the biggest by far so far even though it’s out of the top twenty and down six places this week.
21. Tiffany – “Could’ve Been”
Tiffany‘s also out of the top twenty with a drop of nine places with her second UK single release that’s also been a top five hit, though not as big as her first.
20. Bros – “Drop The Boy”
Matt, Luke and Craig are down eleven this week and out of the top ten with their second top 40 hit single and their second to peak at No.2.
19. Taylor Dayne – “Prove Your Love”
Also with a second UK top 40 hit to her name is Taylor Dayne, who is down eight this week. Taylor entered the same week as Bros, seven weeks ago.
18. Jellybean featuring Adele Berti – “Just A Mirage”
After five weeks of great progress, Jellybean and Adele go down five places this week with her first UK chart hit and his fourth.
17. Patrick Swayze and Wendy Fraser – “She’s Like The Wind”
Entering the top twenty for the first time is American actor Patrick with his love song-duet from the hit movie ‘Dirty Dancing’, up seven this week.
16. Will Downing – “A Love Supreme”
Joining him is another first-timer, Will Downing, who is up five this week with his first single to reach the UK top twenty.
15. Pat and Mick – “Let’s All Chant”
DJ Pat Sharpe and Mick Brown are chanting up four more places this week with their Stock Aitken Waterman produced cover of the Michael Zager Band 1977 song that reached No.8 here on that occasion.
14. James Brown – “The Payback Mix”
James Brown returned to the UK chart last week with this remix of his 1974 single that never charted here then. So with a climb of eleven places this week, it’s already doing that much better than last week.
13. Jermaine Stewart – “Get Lucky”
Looking to bag his third top ten hit next week is Jermaine Stewart with his second release of 1988, which is up four places this week.
12. Fairground Attraction – “Perfect”
British band Fairground Attraction made their debut last week with their debut single and are making the right impression with a climb of twenty three places that’s the biggest of all this week!
11. Pebbles – “Girlfriend”
US newcomer Pebbles went top ten last week but drops back three places this week and falls out with her first UK chart hit.
10. Fleetwood Mac – “Everywhere”
After following “Little Lies” to the same spot in the UK top five last week, Fleetwood Mac are down six places with the fourth single to come from “Tango In The Night”.
9. The Jackson 5 – “I Want You Back ’88”
The Jackson’s are up one this week with the new Harding/Curnow mix of their 1969 classic. That got to No.2, can they beat that with this new version??
8. George Michael – “One More Try”
George Michael was last week’s highest new entry and is back in the top ten this week with a climb of six places with the fourth single from “Faith”.
7. Climie Fisher – “Love Changes Everything”
Taking a big drop as well this week are Simon and Rob with their biggest hit yet which has been top five for three weeks, but drops five places this week.
6. Natalie Cole – “Pink Cadillac”
Down one this week for Natalie Cole with her first UK top ten hit and only her second top 40 showing since “This Will Be” back in 1975!
5. Bananarama – “I Want You Back”
Here’s another “I Want You Back” but a different one and one that climbs two places this week for the new look Bananarama as they make their seventh appearance in the top five, following “Love In The First Degree” last year and their first, “It Ain’t What You Do” back in 1982.
4. Hazell Dean – “Who’s Leaving Who?”
It’s a great week for Hazell Dean too, she’s up two places as well and now equaling her previous chart high with “Whatever I Do” in 1984. Can he beat that next week…?
3. Danny Wilson – “Mary’s Prayer”
Booting everyone out of the way are Danny Wilson who had a very good ascent of the chart last week and are up twelve this week into the top three with a song that was originally released in February last year!
2. Pet Shop Boys – “Heart”
It’s all change at the top as Chris and Neil slip back one place after three weeks in pole position with their fourth UK chart topper and second from their current album, “Actually”.
1. S-Express – “Theme From S-Express”
Which means Mark Moore and his gang take their debut single to the very top of the chart with a climb of two places this week and they are also the third act this year now whose debut single has gone all the way! But can they stay there for a second week or will the unstoppable Danny Wilson or even Hazell Dean or Bananarama claim their first chart topper? There’s only one way to find out…
