UK Top 40 Singles Chart for Sunday 17th April 1988
So this was the chart that Radio 1 DJ Bruno Brookes broadcast from 5-7pm with data from the GALLUP computer based on record sales from Monday 11th to Saturday 16th April 1988.
This is how the charts USED to look with new entries, climbers and non-movers, all based solely on record purchases.
This week, thirty years ago, there were seven new entry’s, sixteen climbers and ONE non-mover! And it was announced like this…
40. AC/DC – “That’s The Way I Wanna Rock And Roll”
AC/DC fall thirteen places this week with their second single taken from their album, “Blow Up Your Video”.
39. Rob Base and DJ E-Z Rock – “It Takes Two”
Just as NY hip-hop duo Rob ‘Base’ Ginyard and his pal DJ E-Z Rock (real name unknown) make their UK chart debut with their debut single which is already top 40 Stateside.
38. Deacon Blue – “When Will You Make My Phone Ring?”
Deacon Blue are back with another single that missed the top 40 first time around. This is the follow up to “Dignity” back in January and comes from their debut album, “Raintown”.
37. Kylie Minogue – “I Should Be So Lucky”
Former chart topper Kylie Minogue is down sixteen this week with her debut UK single, but fear not, there’s a follow up on the way very soon!
36. The Mission – “Beyond The Pale”
The Mission get a new entry next, their second release of 1988 and the follow up to “Tower Of Strength” and looking for a third top twenty hit in twelve months.
35. Fairground Attraction – “Perfect”
Here comes another new entry and a chart debut for British band Fairground Attraction with the lead single from their forthcoming, debut album, “The First Of A Million Kisses”.
34. Iron Maiden – “Can I Play With Madness?”
British metal rockers Iron Maiden suffer another big fall this week, sixteen places and out of the top twenty with their biggest single yet.
33. Luther Vandross – “I Gave It Up”
Luther Vandross is back too for a second time this year with the follow up to “Give Me The Reason”, taken from the album of the same name.
32. a-ha – “Stay On These Roads”
Expect big changes in the upper half of this weeks chart as a-ha take a big slide of fifteen places and out of the top twenty.
31. Wet Wet Wet – “Temptation”
And following them are The Wets, down twelve places and also out of the top twenty with their fourth hit single out of four singles released.
30. All About Eve – “Every Angel”
Bucking that trend are All About Eve who were new last week and climb ten places this week into the top thirty to follow their last single, “Wild Hearted Woman”.
29. T’Pau – “Sex Talk”
T’Pau take a knock down of six places this week with the fourth single from their smash hit chart topping album, “Bridge Of Spies”.
28. The Eurythmics – “I Need A Man”
And dropping back two places this week go Annie and Dave with the latest single from their seventh studio album, “Savage”.
27. Debbie Gibson – “Only In My Dreams”
Debbie Gibson is another casualty of the all the changes, as she leaves the top twenty with a fall of eleven places.
26. Brenda Russell – “Piano In The Dark”
But Brenda Russell plays her “Piano In The Dark” two places higher than last week, now her fourth week on the UK top 40.
25. James Brown – “The Payback Mix”
James Brown is back in the UK top 40 for the first time in three years with this remix of his 1974 hit “The Payback”, which failed to chart over here first time around.
24. Patrick Swayze and Wendy Fraser – “She’s Like The Wind”
Dirty dancer Patrick Swayze together with Wendy Fraser brought their duet from the hit movie to the UK chart last week so it’s hardly surprising that they take a big leap of fifteen places this week.
23. Def Leppard – “Armageddon it”
Def Leppard spent just one week in the top twenty with the latest release from “Hysteria” as it goes down three places this week.
22. Aswad – “Don’t Turn Around”
And the former number one from Aswad leaves both the top ten and the top twenty with a fall of twelve this week.
21. Will Downing – “A Love Supreme”
Going up thirteen places, however, is Will Downing with his first UK top 40 hit and going good so far. Top twenty next week…?
20. Sinitta – “Cross My Broken Heart”
Sinitta takes a big tumble of fourteen places this week, right out of the top ten where she’s been in sixth position for the past three weeks.
19. Pat and Mick – “Let’s All Chant”
While another Stock Aitken Waterman produced song that was a new entry last week climbs ten this week and into the top twenty for DJ’s Pat Sharpe and Mick Brown.
18. Eighth Wonder – “I’m Not Scared”
Time has run out for Eighth Wonder too as then drop eleven places with their first top 40 hit, after an incredible eight weeks of climbing.
17. Jermaine Stewart – “Get Lucky”
Jermaine Stewart continues his ‘luck’ with a climb of five places this week and into the UK top twenty for the third time in his career.
16. Glen Goldsmith – “Dreaming”
But Glen Goldsmith goes down four places with his highest charting single so far. And look out for his debut album called “What You See Is What You Get” coming soon!
15. Danny Wilson – “Mary’s Prayer”
Danny Wilson, having spent many months around with this song, came into the top 40 finally last week and are rewarded with a huge climb of twenty places this week.
14. George Michael – “One More Try”
Just one above is this weeks highest new entry which comes from George Michael with the follow up to “Father Figure” and the fourth single from his debut album, “Faith”.
13. Jellybean featuring Adele Berti – “Just A Mirage”
Jellybean has another good week, he’s up two more places with Adele Berti with his fourth UK top twenty hit in less than a year.
12. Tiffany – “Could’ve Been”
After three weeks in fourth place, Tiffany is down eight places and out of the top ten with her second UK chart hit. This song, incidentally, topped the US chart, her second in her home country.
11. Taylor Dayne – “Prove Your Love”
Also leaving the top ten with her second UK hit single is Taylor Dayne, who is down just three places. This song has peaked at No.7 at home, the same place “Tell It To My Heart” reached last year.
10. The Jackson 5 – “I Want You Back ’88”
I promised you some BIG changes at the top and it starts here with The Jackson’s back in the UK top five for the first time in seven years with a big climb of twenty one places. But it’s not the biggest!
9. Bros – “Drop The Boy”
Bros have been propping up second place for four weeks now but they do so no longer with a ‘drop’ of seven places.
8. Pebbles – “Girlfriend”
Making her UK top ten debut is Pebbles who climbs five places this week and looking for a top five position next week, just as this song did Stateside.
7. Bananarama – “I Want You Back”
The second “I Want You back” in the top ten this week comes from Bananarama who were last week’s highest climber and move up seven places this week to claim their eighth UK top ten hit and the second from their current album, “Wow”.
6. Hazell Dean – “Who’s Leaving Who?”
Hazell Dean becomes this weeks highest placed Stock Aitken Waterman production as she climbs three places to match her first top ten hit, “Searchin'”, back in 1984.
5. Natalie Cole – “Pink Cadillac”
And leap frogging her is Natalie Cole who scores her very first UK top ten hit with a climb of six places with the first UK chart hit from her new album, “Everlasting”.
4. Fleetwood Mac – “Everywhere”
Fleetwood Mac go up one more place this week to equal the chart position attained by “Little Lies” last Autumn, also from the “Tango In The Night” album.
3. S-Express – “Theme From S-Express”
But claiming this weeks highest climber is Mark Moore’s S-Express who made their debut last week and shoot up twenty two places straight into the top three, and who knows where from here…?!
2. Climie Fisher – “Love Changes Everything”
Simon and Rob continue to progress with their biggest chart hit yet, moving on up one more spot this week and into second place.
1. Pet Shop Boys – “Heart”
But no one this week is able to move Chris and Neil, who claim a third week on top with the second number one from their current album, “Actually”. I feel they may have some competition next week, but who will it be? Climie Fisher? S-Express? Fleetwood Mac? Natalie Cole? They’re all closing in on the Pet Shop Boys, but what will happen? There’s only one way to find out…
