Thirty years ago: UK Top 40 Singles Chart for Sunday 23rd April 1989

So this was the chart that Radio 1 DJ Bruno Brookes broadcast from 5-7pm with data from the GALLUP computer based on record sales from Monday 17th to Saturday 22nd April 1989.
This is how the charts USED to look with new entries, climbers and non-movers, all based solely on record purchases.
This week, thirty years ago, there were six new entry’s, ten climbers and five non-movers! And it was announced like this…
40. Roxette – “The Look”
We start with a new entry and a UK chart debut for a duo from Sweden, with the third release from their latest album “Look Sharp”, that’s already been a big hit in America.
39. The Blow Monkeys – “This Is Your Life”
But down seven places this week go Dr. Robert and his merry men after just one week of progress.
38. Barry Manilow – “Please Don’t Be Scared”
Barry’s also falling, three places for him, also after just one week on the up.
37. Bobby Brown – “Don’t Be Cruel”
Bobby’s down ten this week with the title track of his debut album, expect another one very soon!
36. Paul Simpson and Adeva – “Musical Freedom”
Paul and Adeva fall eleven places this week, their sixth in total on the top 40.
35. Jody Watley – “Real Love”
Jody’s also dropping with her comeback single, down four for her. Expect her second album very soon though.
34. Yello – “Of Course I’m Lying”
Boris and Dieter and dropping down as well, six places for them and out of the top thirty this week.
33. Debbie Gibson – “Electric Youth”
But Debbie Gibson is back, a new entry for her and the title track of her forthcoming second studio album, and the follow up to “Lost In Your Eyes” back in January.
32. Guns’N’Roses – “Paradise City”
The boys from LA are down thirteen places this week with their biggest UK chart hit yet.
31. Duran Duran – “Do You Believe In Shame?”
And down one place this week after a new entry last week are Duran Duran with the third single from “Big Thing”.
30. Bon Jovi – “I’ll Be There For You”
A new entry for Bon Jovi now and also a third single release from their recent No.1 album “New Jersey”.
29. Swing Out Sister – “You On My Mind”
New on last week and Swing Out Sister are up seven places this week with their return to the top 40 and the first track from their new album due very soon.
28. Pat and Mick – “I Haven’t Stopped Dancing Yet”
Pat Sharp and Mick Brown drop just six places this week with their second UK top 40 hit in support of Help A London Child.
27. Yazz – “Where Has All The Love Gone”
Yazz is back for the second time this year, a new entry for her with the fourth single from her debut album “Wanted”.
26. Poison – “Ye Mama Don’t Dance”
And also back for the second time this year are Poison with this new entry and the follow up to “Every Rose Has It’s Thorn”.
25. Coldcut featuring Lisa Stansfield – “People Hold On”
Former dance chart number one from Coldcut and Lisa Stansfield peaked at No.11 two weeks ago, it’s falling ten places this week and out of the top twenty.
24. Natalie Cole – “Miss You Like Crazy”
There are two joint highest climbers this week, both of fifteen places and this is one of them for Natalie Cole, new last week and back with the first single from her new album.
23. De La Soul – “Me, Myself And I”
Up three places this week for De La Soul who have taken this song to No.34 Stateside – they’ve bettered that here already!
22. Soul II Soul – “Keep On Movin'”
Jazzie B and Co. fall six places this week and sadly out of the top twenty for them after six weeks.
21. Inxs – “Mystify”
And also out of the top twenty this week are Inxs, down seven places for them with the fifth single from their massive album “Kick”.
20. Jason Donovan – “Too Many Broken Hearts”
Jason falls nine places this week but look out for his debut album coming in two weeks time!
19. Donna Summer – This Time I Know It’s For Real”
And the other big SAW track recently, Donna is also down nine places, taken from her latest album “Another Place And Time“.
18. Madonna – “Like A Prayer”
Right behind them is the former number one from Madonna who is down ten places this week, the album of the same name holds at No.6 this week.
17. The Cookie Crew – “Got To Keep On”
The Cookie Crew got their first top twenty hit last week and they are not moving anywhere this week.
16. Paula Abdul – “Straight Up”
Paula’s down nine places this week with her first UK chart hit, the album “Forever Your Girl” slips to No.14 this week.
15. Simple Minds – “This Is Your Land”
A new entry last week and Simple Minds drop two places this week, their new album is also out in two weeks time.
14. U2 and BB King – “When Love Comes To Town”
After just one week in the top ten, U2 and BB King drop eight places this week.
13. Metallica – “One”
Metallica got a big new entry last week and they are climbing five places this week with a song that’s already their biggest UK chart hit!
12. Midnight Oil – “Beds Are Burning”
And the Australian rockers continue their ascent, up nine for them this week with their most successful UK chart hit so far.
11. The London Boys – “Requiem”
Last week’s highest climber is up another thirteen places this week for Dennis and Edem with their first UK chart showing.
10. Inner City – “Ain’t Nobody Better”
Kevin and Paris are back in the top ten for the third time in seven months, new in last week and up ten places for them this week!
9. Morrissey – “Interesting Drug”
This week’s highest new entry see’s the return of Morrissey with the follow up to “Last Of The Famous International Playboys” back in February.
8. Beatmasters featuring Merlin – “Who’s In The House?”
Here’s this week’s second joint highest climber of fifteen places, The Beatmasters who get their second UK top ten hit – their first was “Rok Da House” in early 1988.
7. Fine Young Cannibals – “Good Thing”
Up two more places this week for FYC with their second top ten hit of the year, the album “The Raw And The Cooked” is up to No.4 on the album chart this week.
6. Kon Kan – “I Beg Your Pardon”
After six weeks on the chart and a non-mover last week, Kon Kan drop one place this week with their UK chart debut.
5. The Cure – “Lullaby”
Last week’s highest new entry climbs seven places this week and into the top five for The Cure for the first time since “The Love Cats” back in 1983!
4. Holly Johnson – “Americanos”
Holly’s going nowhere this week, holding on just where he was last week – look out for his debut album “Blast” that’s out tomorrow!
3. Transvision Vamp – “Baby I Don’t Care”
And so are Wendy James and the gang, they are sticking in third places for a second week running with their biggest UK chart hit yet.
2. Simply Red – “If You Don’t Know Me By Now”
As are Simply Red for a third week running, “A New Flame” is back up to No.1 on this week’s album chart.
1. The Bangles – “Eternal Fame”
So The Bangles get a third week on top of the singles chart with “Everything” climbing to No.7 on this week’s album chart. Can they make it a fourth week…there’s only one way to find out!
