What The Pop?

PLAYLIST: What The Pop?

Hands up if you know how many different types of pop music exist?

If you said 11 – well done. According to some sources you would be correct!

What are they I hear you ask? Well, here’s a quick rundown together with definitions and some sample songs.

Pop Music

Commercial popular music, in particular accessible, tuneful music of a kind popular since the 1950s and sometimes contrasted with rock, soul or other forms of popular music.

Folk-Pop

Folk pop is a genre originating from the 1950s which blends Pop music with Contemporary Folk. It has many similarities with Folk Rock of its era and many folk pop bands have been defined as such, as they both tend to use backing bands and pop structures.

However, folk pop is characterized by a more commercial sound, with less reliance on electric guitar, a larger presence of harmonized and catchy melodies, and shorter, softer songs.

Chamber-Pop

Chamber pop is a style of rock music characterized by an emphasis on melody and texture, the intricate use of strings, horns, piano, and vocal harmonies, and other components drawn from the orchestral and lounge pop of the 1960s.

Shiver-Pop

Closely related to indie pop and indietronica. Acoustical elements may include reverberated vocals and guitar, booming choruses, and use of synthesizer, piano, or drum machines.

Metro-pop-olis

A sophisticated, indie-leaning, and undeniably catchy cousin of mainstream pop. Metropopolis was everywhere in 2014, thanks to artists like Charli XCX, Bleachers and St. Vincent.”

Synth-Pop

Synth-pop (short for synthesizer pop also called techno-pop) is a subgenre of new wave music that first became prominent in the late 1970s and features the synthesizer as the dominant musical instrument. It was prefigured in the 1960s and early 1970s by the use of synthesizers in progressive rock, electronic, art rock, disco, and particularly the “Krautrock” of bands like Kraftwerk.

It arose as a distinct genre in Japan and the United Kingdom in the post-punk era as part of the new wave movement of the late 1970s to the mid-1980s.

Shimmer-Pop

Shimmer pop is closely related to indie pop and indietronica. Acoustical elements may include reverberated vocals and guitar, booming choruses, and use of synthesizer, piano, or drum machines.

Indie Pop

Indie pop (also typeset as indie-pop or indiepop) is a music genre and subculture that combines pop rock with DIY ethic in opposition to the style and tone of mainstream pop music. … In later years, the definition of indie pop has bifurcated to also mean bands from unrelated DIY scenes/movements with pop leanings.

Indie Poptimism

A disposition to view pop culture in a positive light. The belief that pop music and literature has the potential to present something meaningful.

Indie Poptimism Edge

As above but with an extra edge to it.

Indie Poptimism Pulse

As above bit with a bit of a pulse?

Never mind what the pop, what the fuck?
