EVERY UK NUMBER ONE SONG: ‘Rock-A-Hula-Baby’/’Can’t Help Falling in Love’ – Elvis Presley

What was the number one song in the UK on 22nd February 1962?

By Hayley Beasley Dye

It’s only been a few weeks without Elvis at number one, but here he is again with another double AA side- Rock-A-Hula-Baby and Can’t Help Falling in Love, which was number one for 4 weeks.

Rock-A-Hula-Baby: Direct from the Elvis film Blue Hawaii, this track smacks of flower garlands and swaying hips. It is indeed a Hawaiian take on rockabilly and the song title suggests. It’s a song that speeds through the verses and choruses and this actually adds to the excitement of the song. I quite like it.

Can’t Help Falling in Love: Another song from the Blue Hawaii film and one of Presley’s most popular songs. This song has probably been slow danced to at weddings countless times and probably with good reason. It’s a candid and warm song about falling deeply in love. It’s a nice tune, but here’s the thing- I don’t think I love it as much as most people seem to. There’s better love songs out there, in my opinion.

Lyrics

Rock-a-Hula-Baby:

Rock-a-hula, rock-rock-a-hula
Rock-a-hula, rock-rock-a-hula
Rock-a-hula, rock-rock-a-hula
Rock-a-hula, rock-rock-a-hula
Rock-a-hula, rock-rock-a-hula
Rock-a-hula, rock
Rock-a-hula, rock
A-hula, rock
A-hula, rock, a-hula, rock
The way she moves her hips to her fingertips
I feel I’m heaven bound
And when she starts to sway, I’ve gotta say
She really move the grass around
Rock-a-hula baby
Rock-a-hula baby
Got a hula lulu from Honolulu
That rock-a-hula baby of mine
Rock-a-hula, rock-rock-a-hula
Rock-a-hula, rock
Although I love to kiss my little hula miss
I never get the chance
I want to hold her tight all through the night
But all she wants to do is dance
Rock-a-hula baby
Rock-a-hula baby
Got a hula lulu from Honolulu
That rock-a-hula baby of mine
Rock-a-hula baby
Rock-a-hula baby
Rock-a-hula baby
Rock, rock, rock, rock
Rock-a-hula baby
Rock-a-hula baby
Rock-a-hula baby
Rock, rock, rock, rock
Rock-a-hula baby
Rock-a-hula baby
Got a hula lulu from Honolulu
That rock-a-hula baby of mine
Oh well, that rock-a-hula baby of mine

Can’t Help Falling in Love:

Wise men say only fools rush in
But I can’t help falling in love with you
Shall I stay?
Would it be a sin
If I can’t help falling in love with you?
Like a river flows surely to the sea
Darling so it goes
Some things are meant to be
Take my hand, take my whole life too
For I can’t help falling in love with you
Like a river flows surely to the sea
Darling so it goes
Some things are meant to be
Take my hand, take my whole life too
For I can’t help falling in love with you
For I can’t help falling in love with you
