The Bangles

REVIEW: ‘Gold’ – The Bangles

The Bangles – “Gold”

The Bangles debuted in 1981 with “Getting Out Of Hand”, but it wasn’t until 1986 that they mastered a chart hit single. Curiously, it was the UK where the group first gained recognition with two minor hits, “Hero Takes A Fall” and “Going Down To Liverpool” in 1984, prior to “Manic Monday” making No.2 on both sides of the Atlantic two years later. With two US chart toppers and a month-long number one in the UK in 1989, The Bangles greatest hits of the 1980’s are brought together by those people at Demon Music Group as part of their Gold series on one CD…or three in fact as this collection stems to.

They are all here, from “If She Knew What She Wants” (US No.29, UK No.31), “Walk Like An Egyptian” (US No.1, UK No.3), “Walking Down Your Street” (US No.11, UK No.16), “Hazy Shade Of Winter” (US No.2, UK No.11), “In Your Room” (US No.5, UK No.35) and the dual chart topping epic, “Eternal Flame” together with a host of album tracks and remixes that forms CD3. Susanna Hoffs, Debbi Peterson, Annette Zilinskas and Vicki Peterson called it a day in 1989, having given us their biggest hit of all, but did reform ten years after after Hoffs had pursued a solo career. Their comeback ‘single’, “Get The Girl”, was especially written for the second Austin Powers film, ‘The Spy Who Shagged Me’, but this is not included here.

Nor is their official comeback album of 2003, “Doll Revolution”, which featured the superb single “Something That You Said” (UK No.38, their first top 40 hit since “Eternal Flame”) and nor does this compilation feature their most recent album, “Sweetheart Of The Sun” from 2011, so be warned, this is not a definitive or an essential collection of Bangles discography. But if it’s 80’s heritage Bangles you want, album tracks, B sides and more, then this is for you. The Bangles continued to play live as a trio until 2018 when the missing quarter Annette Zilinskas returned with the departure of former Runaways guitarist Michael Steele, who had been ‘filling in’ for Annette.
