British band Mungo Jerry, hit the top spot for 7 weeks with In The Summertime.
In The Summertime was the best-selling single of 1970 and in fact it became one of the best-selling singles of all time, selling over 30 million copies. Quite a feat for a sing that is largely made up of random vocal noises. It’s a distinctive song that praises the lazy hazy days of summer. It’s a fun tune where the genre is indescribable (bouncy hill-billy meandering perhaps?). I’ll always feel quite fond of In The Summertime and it’s definitely one I heard time and time again during my childhood (despite it being released 6 years before I was born). Perhaps this suggests a timelessness about it.
